174.0. "Wanted: Parts for a Matrix 5.5" by CECILE::SCHNEIDER () Fri Sep 13 1985 13:23

Well, whereas I and the boat are getting along fine, we've
had a few disasters this summer. I have managed to
establish that Matrix went out of business (about three
	years ago).

My question: is there any place that might stock parts
to a boat (catamaran) no longer manufactured? If I can't
go that route I am then going to be looking to have some
fiberglass tooled (that to replace the boken rudder) and
aluminum (sp?) tooled (to replace the support piece at
	the base of the mast).

Any suggestions on how to tackle this would be most
gratefully appreciated by both Don and I.

	Thanks in advance,
			   Audrey

You say you are going to replace a fibreglass rudder and what sounds like
a tabernacle for the mast. How large is the rudder? It might be easier
to fabricate the new rudder out of aluminum plate. 6061-T6 is a good alloy
for marine use. It machines well, welds well, and is about as corrosion
resistant as you will find in aluminum. It can also be anodized easily.
Typical machining costs seem to run between $25-35/hour. Be sure to get
an estimate before you start. Where are you located?

BEFORE BLOWING A LOT OF COIN ON A ONE OFF THAT MIGHT NOT WORK, I'D
CALL UP AN OUTSIDE CAT RUDDER MANUFACTURER. ON HOBIE CATS, THE HOT
RUDDER TO HAVE ARE FIBERGLAS EPOs. I KNOW THEY MAKE THEM FOR PRINDLES
AND OTHER MAKES. THEY ARE EXPENSIVE, (ABOUT $185 FOR A PAIR), BUT THAT
IS IN A CHOICE OF SEVERAL COLORS. ALL YOU WOULD HAVE TO DO IS DRILL
THE MOUNT HOLES. THIS IS EASY SINCE THERE ARE NO HOLES IN THEM TO
BEGIN WITH SINCE MOST PEOPLE (RACERS) LIKE TO SET THE CAMBER THEMSELVES.

YOU CAN CONTACT MURRY'S MARINE IN CAPISTRIO CAL FOR A PRICE AND SHIPPING
AT 805 684 8393. YOU SHOULD ASK TO BE PUT ON TO THEIR MAILING LIST AS
THEY ARE THE LARGEST CAT ACCESSORY DEALER IN THE US.

THERE IS A SECOND COMPANY CALLED QUICK FIN OR SOMETHING ALSO IN CAL. THEY
SELL THERE FIBERGLAS RUDDERS FOR 125 A PAIR. SINCE YOU ARE NOT RACING, THIS
MIGHT BE GOOD ENOUGH.

A THIRD CHOICE IS TO TRY A LARGE HOBIE CAT DEALER SUCH AS SMALLCRAFT IN
HARWICHPORT OR STEVE MEHL'S IN HIGHAM. MANY PEOPLE SWAP THIER NYLON RUDDERS
FOR EPOs WHEN PURCHASING A NEW BOAT. THEY MAY GIVE YOU A BREAK ON THE PRICE.

TO YOUR SECOND QUESTION, HAVE YOU LOOKED AT OTHER MAKES OF MASTS?
THE HOBIE CATS (14-16 AND 18) BOTH HAVE THIER MAST CONNECTION POP RIVITED
SO THAT YOU CAN REPLACE THEM. THEY RUN ABOUT $30. THE SECTION THAT IS IN
THE BOTTOM OF THE MAST THAT ALLOWS ROTATION AND STEPPING IS ALSO POP
RIVITED AND REPLACEABLE. YOU MAY WISH TO MEASURE THE SIZE OF THE STEP
YOU NEED AND COMPARE IT WITH OTHER BRANDS, (HOBIE,NACRA,PRINDLE,G-CAT ETC)
TO SEE IF ANY OF THEM WILL DO THE TRICK.

IF NOT, CHECK THE MAST DIAMETER TO SEE IF YOU COULD RIVIT IN ANOTHER MAKE'S
SET INTO YOUR BOAT, THEN ALL YOU WOULD HAVE TO DO IS SILICONE IT TO MAKE
SURE IT IS WATERPROOF.
