162.0. "Winter Storage?" by USMRW1::BRYAN () Mon Aug 26 1985 10:11

Its getting close to the time to think about winter storage. And
because of demand, it's never to early to think about securing a
mooring for next season. I presently keep my boat on a slip in
East Greenwich, R.I. and would like to move to a new cruising
locale for next summer. Ideally, I would like to winter my boat
(CAL 25-MKII) at the same place that I'll sail next season.
Hence, I'm really seeking information on both winter and summer
storage.

My preference for cruising is in one of four places in no
particular order (every place is equally close/far):

   - Wickford
   - Marion or anywhere on Buzzards Bay easily accessable via 495
   - Newburyport
   - Scituate (or Cohassett)

I know that both Marion and Scituate are prime cruising locales
and it is supposedly difficult to obtain a mooring; I'm hoping
that winter storage may help in securing a mooring for next
summer. I've also put my name on a waiting list for a slip in
Wickford but my preference is for a mooring. I love Newburyport
for the town, but I've never cruised there (I've read that the
harbor has tricky currents and is difficult to get in/out of).
Does anyone have any experience with Newburyport?

As far as winter storage goes, I need only the basics:
hauling, the mast unstepped, mast storage, and shoring fees for
brownells. I'm hoping to have the boat hauled late: late October
or early November. The prices I've been quoted in East
Greenwich are as follows:

    - Winter storage (hauling/launching, bottom wash) @12.50 ft.
    - Mast stepping @1.75 ft.
    - Mast storage @1.00 ft.
    - Shoring fee @2.00 ft.

As always, I'm looking for as much information as I can arm
myself with before plunking down a few more hundred here and a
few hundred there. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

re Scituate...

I've sailed in and out of Scituate for years. It is not what I'd consider
a good cruising locale. If you want to go out and sail around for the day
it's great because you're out into open water very quickly. The problem is
that there's no place you can sail to in a couple hours.

The harbor's very crowded (which one isn't?!). The Harbormaster's in the
process of bringing the mooring and slip situation under control. There are
long waiting lists for slips and moorings. Last price I heard for a mooring
was $3000. This entitles you to a place on the bottom for your mooring block
and gear. I'd call the Harbormaster to find out the status of both situations.

Young's is the only boatyard that hauls and stores boats in the harbor. They
have slips but I don't know if they do waiting lists or too much else about
their current operations.

Simm's is in Scituate town but access is up the North River which can be
VERY tricky. Friends of mine who've dealt with them have never said anything
positive about them either.

If you'd like I'll get phone numbers for all of the above for you.

RE: Newburyport.

I've only been there once. Yes, you're right about a nice town but a tricky
place to get in and out of (unless you're a power boat!). It's a rough entrance
if you have much of a following sea. I've heard that the current can exceed
hull speed!

My vote would be for buzzards bay - perhaps Kingman Marine or Parker's in
Cataumet as an alternative. There may be a long waiting list however.

Have you considered Salem? Though you mentioned 495, I'm not sure if Salem
would be out of your reach. Try Westshore Marine. They only offer launch service
and a mooring (maybe water too), but it's a nice day sail to Rockport to the
North and as far as Scituate to the South. That leaves Gloucester, Beverly,
Marblehead, Boston, Hingham and Cohasset inbetween. Westshore Marine is listed
in the Marblehead phone directory. (It operates out of the Marblehead side
of Salem Harber - Westshore Drive). There still may be a chance that you could
get a mooring there for next season.

re 2: I tried getting the phone # for Westshore Marina in either
Marblehead or Salem to no avail. Do you have the number handy?

Thanks,
