156.0. "An Ounce of Prevention" by AUTUMN::RICHARDSN () Thu Aug 08 1985 09:10
As much as I hate to hear about accidents, there is usually a good
message to be learned from it. Monday night a 21' O'Day sailboat
was moored on Lake Champlain, at South Hero, VT. During the night
it broke loose from the mooring and drifted into a high voltage
power line. The power line was not damaged, but the boat fried down to
the waterline. Luckily the owners of the boat stayed at the hotel
they were moored near, so there were no injuries. According to what
was going around on the marine radio, the owner had noticed the frayed
line, and "was going to fix it the next day." Needless to say he
was a day late.
The two lessons: If you've got questionable equipment.... Fix it now.
Don't wait until it fails.
Give power lines RESPECT!
I hope this was a needless note, but it sure opened my eyes to see the
charred remains.
Safe sailing,
Eric
