137.0. "Narragansett Bay Marina Recomme" by EVE::RUDY () Tue Jul 09 1985 18:03

I am planning ahead for next season. I am planning to move my boat
to Narragansett bay and lookin for recommendations for a marina there. We
will need a slip. We would be coming down route 495 from Harvard. I prefer
not to have to go as far down as Newport either.

Try to avoid parts of the bay north of Warwick. The big boats coming in
and out of Providence have a narrow channel and the bay just isn't was wide
or as clean there. I'm in Greenwich Bay at Masthead Marina and find it about
a 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hour sail to Newport in good wind. There are about five
or six marinas in the immediate area.

Give me a call or send MAIL if you want some more info.

I have a slip at the Bend Boat Basin which is located between Portsmouth
and Newport RI. They have nice facilities: showers, washers/dryers,
chandlery, restaurant/bar. I believe that the yard is about average -
you've got to check up on everything.

It's an hour sail to newport for easy trips to Cuttyhunk and Block Island
and I've even sailed all the way to Edgartown in a single day.

I work in LTN2 and it takes just about 1 3/4 hours to drive down. I've
always thought the drive to be worth it because the sailing is so good
down there.

Good luck with waiting lists!

I also keep a boat in East Greenwich. Its a fabulous little town that
is just cute enough without being pretensious. And the cove is extremely
protected against just about any wind short of Northerlies. But, I have
only one problem with this arrangement: the distance to the harbor mouth
makes ocean sailing a long daysail or two day cruise.

Nevertheless, I love East Greenwich and may stay there one more season
before moving on to new crusing grounds. There are two principal
marinas in the area, Brewers and Nortons, both with slips. Masthead
Marina is another marina, but I had a -bad- experience with them and
cannot recommend them. There are also a number of resturants with
marinas attached to them. I'm berthed behind The Inn-Between which
was an emergency measure on my part to get out of Masthead Marina. The
docks/facilities are fine here-the problem is that the resturant crowd
from the Inn-Between and from Harborside-Lobstermania get rowdy at night
and make sleeping at dockside foolhardy. For resturant/marinas try
The East Greenwich Marina (The Inn-Between) and 20 Water Street. There
is also a Yacht Club.

I'm looking at getting a mooring in Wickford next year. Wickford is a
neat little town that much closer to the ocean. Beyond East Greenwich
and Wickford are the marinas on the east side of the bay which I don't
know anything about (like you, I come screaming down 495 every weekend
to get to my boat - 65m. 1:20 minutes). Bristol has mostly moorings
and the cove is not especially well protected. By the way, if you're
into racing (I'm not), Narrangansett Bay is incredibly active.

Best of luck,

I too would recommend Wickford, but I don't know how big the facilities are
there. Its a lovely little town you can drive through on your way to Newport
and is probably even more protected than Greenwich Bay.

There is also Dutch Harbor just south of the Jamestown Bridge, but your on
the other side of Conanicut island from Newport and you'd have to go just as
far north or south to get there. I don't know much about the East side of
the bay.

I have spent the past 3 seasons at Masthead Marina. I would not recommend
this place to a stinkpot. This year the new owners removed the derelect
barges which had been providing some breakwater and replaced them with nothing.
There were days when we could not set things on countertops of our Tartan 33
without having them tossed on the sole.

Gloria really did this place in. I wont bore you with the gory details, you
can get them from anyone with enough of a boat left to winter there. I am
completely disgusted with the owner and yard managers attitude toward the
marina and the boat owners.

They still have no plans to correct the breakwater, however they will be
opening late for the 1986 season and are increasing their rates to $36/ft.

I moved to The WARF Marina. Sorry, the Warf has no more slips for rent.

I have heard good things about Nortons' and Bend Boat Basin, and I understand
Brewer's (formerly Cowesset) in Warwick has improved.

Good luck.
