116.0. "Norwegian Sailor" by OSL01::JAN () Thu May 30 1985 12:32

Hello everyone!

I am writing to this notesfile with the hope that someone can help me
to get in contact with a company that might stock the right spares for
me.

Let me get to the case, my name is Jan Johansen, I am working with DEC
in Norway. I am lucky to have a Johnson outboard motor, 85hp. It has
been serving me for many years without problems of any kind. But
unfortunately it starts to get a bit old, it is a -69 model. Also it is
heavy. Therefore a hydraulic tilting device is standard, without it I would
never be able to tilt it out of the water.

My problem right now is the hydraulic lifting cylinder. It has corroded
after all these years and is inoperable. It seems to be quite impossible
to get a new cylinder anymore, at least not in Europe they say.

Is anyone on your side of the Atlantic able to tell me if it would still
be possible to get a new one over there, or tell me how to get in contact
with a company that could hopefully help me?

Look forward to hear from you over there, also for general talk about
sailing and boating. I also have a sailing boat with which I have much fun.

Jan,
If you can get me the model and serial numbers from the engine I'll make some
calls to Johnson dealers in the Boston area to see if it's available and
how much it's going to cost you.

curious - What's a sailor doing with an 85 hp outboard?

Hi,

Thanks for quick response! Second thing first: The 85 hp outboard is used with
another boat, it is a 17' daycruiser (Fjordling). We use it as ferry for our-
selves; we live out on an island in the summer. That's why we have this boat.
The sailing boat is more for pleasure. It is not a large boat, a 18' Oslojolle.

First thing second; I will check serial number plate and collect as much data
as possible during this weekend.

Thanks, Jan
