Springtime is the season to agonize over the choice between types of varnishes and bottom paints. When you're miles from a decent sailing store (Merrimack, N.H. for example), it's nice to know help is still available. I just solved a problem choosing between polyurethane and other varnishes by a phone call to some helpful folks at INTERLUX paints. They have a free number that I thought others might find equally useful: 1-800-INTRLUX. Bob Blaisdell

I used the Interlux number. They were very helpful. Last year I used Micron-33 bottom paint. Megabucks, but it was worth it. I called to find where I could get the same paint this year and get prices. They gave me a number of names. The first one I called was Edwards on Dorchester Ave. Boston. They quoted me $159.00/gal. I then called Bliss. They wanted $104.88 for the same thing. Neither one had the apoxy primer I wanted. Back to Interlux. They gave me the name of a mail order house, Jamestown Distributors out of RI. They quoted $95.40/gal and $1.00 shipping. Bottom paints are very expensive, look around! BTW, I have tried other interlux paints and petit and KL-990. The best by far, and most expensive is Micron-33. You get what you pay for. RLH |
