55.0. "Hard water sailing" by CLOUD9::FRENCH () Wed Sep 19 1984 14:45
At the risk of rushing the season (I have not put my sailboats away yet, and
don't intend to for a while) this note is to enquire about iceboating.
Last winter I had an iceboat built to take the mast and sail from my
Sunfish. Alas, it was a terrible season, with lots of snow and little
good ice.
Are there any other ice boaters out there? Are there any organizations
around NH, Vt, Mass which cater to hard water sailing? In April I passed
a sign near the north end of Winnipesaukee (Moultonboro perhaps) that
said something about an iceboating association. Anyone know anything
about it?
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who is interested in iceboating
or interested in building one. I have specs for the DN design, which was
made popular during the great depression by the Detroit News (hence the DN).
Mine is a simple unenclosed design which has a parts cost of about $150
(excluding sail and mast)
I realize it is only Sept, but the good ice is generally at the beginning
of winter (and also at the beginning of spring).

| I am interested in iceboating and possibly having one built.
