165.0. "520ic won't print" by WOOK::tunsrv2-tunnel.imc.das.dec.com::HEINSELMAN (Russell Heinselman) Sun Mar 16 1997 23:19

I have a DECcolorwriter 520ic that has decided to stop printing. It goes
through all the motions; but, nothing gets printed. Replacing the
printheads has not helped. This happens with both B/W and color. It also
happens whether the printed matter is generated via the computer or via the
built-in print test. Any idea what to check? Or, is this printer a
candidate for the landfill?

Bad cable maybe? Have you done the prime-thing with the black
    cartridge? How about the self-test?

Not knowing anything about the internals of the printer, I was also
wondering if there's a separate power supply rail (perhaps voltage
controlled to vary the drop volume) that "fires" the jets?

Oh, and the ever-popular "connectoritis" betwwn the cartridge
and the cartridge-carrier. But my HP printers seem to complain
  when they detect badness there.

Funny you should write this. Mine just did almost the same thing. Except
that the color does work but only prints green and the black does not print
at all.

I swaped printers with a 500ci and guess what? same thing. So I reloaded
the driver and still no help.

What else could cause this?

Try a reverse technique - connect the printer to a different system and
test it (if possible). Use a different cable too...

You never said if the self test worked or not. I don't think the
printer has to be connected to a computer for this to work. Just hold the
ON LINE button down and switch the printer power ON, holding the ON LINE
button down until the mechanical reset completes. Change print heads
    and repeat the test.

I didn;t know about the self test. And what a surprise! Both printers
failed. No black print and the color doesn't pront megenta. And thing
simple to check or change?

Thanks

The obvious is the ink cartridges. The black is especially suspect,
since these are normal occurances when the ink HEAD has to be replaced.
You can only get about 3 ink refill cartridges before you have to
    replace the ink head.

Also try priming the black cartridge. This is done by moving the little
slide (near the print head, marked PUSH) back and forth a dozen or so
times until you observe ink entering the small, clear plastic tube that
runs under the slide gizmo... If the print head is the problem, you
will still have problems, even if it primes ok.

The color problem sounds like the magenta color is empty. The color ink
cartridge contains three seperate color chambers... If you do a lot of
black printing with the color cartridge, they don't last too long since
all three colors are mixed to produce black...

    Regards,
    Tom

Thanks Tom but I have tried other ink cartridges and the same results.

I guess its time to send it to service. I might see it again in 2-3 months
