This is a followup of note 829... Currently : ACMS Desktop V2.0 on Win95 16-bit applications using VB4 ACMS VAX V4.0-1 This applciations are running into frequent Win95 resource problems. Windows expert recommendation is that the applications should be put onto NT. Objective is to move to : ACMS Desktop on NT (NT4 preferred) 16-bit applications for time being, 32-bit in 6-12 months ACMS VAX V4.0-1 (don't want to do any change to server application The customer would like to move selected applications over to NT as soon as possible, but would be really reluctant to make any change to the ACMS SP. Even simple ACMS upgrade would be met with considerable resistance. We are considering feasibility of the following as interim solution, knowing that the customer will upgrade to the "correct" versions in about a year's time. Questions : 1. Can ACMS Desktop 2.0 for NT be used on NT4, using VB4 16-bit DLL and TCP/IP ? In this case, they'll continue to use ACMS Desktop v2.0. And ACMS does not need any upgrade. 2. Can ACMS Desktop Gateway 2.3 be used with ACMS 4.0-1 on VAX ? ^^^ ^^^^^ In this case, they'll use have to upgrade to ACMS Desktop V2.3, for both new NT applications, as well as existing Win95 applications. Any other suggestion will be most appreciated, Eddie

Eddie, > 1. Can ACMS Desktop 2.0 for NT be used on NT4, using VB4 16-bit DLL > and TCP/IP ? I think it can. You will most likey have problems staying with ACMS Desktop V2.0 when you try and go to 32 bit mode operation. So one plan would be to run NT 4.0 and 16 bit applications using ACMSDI V2.0, and upgrade to V2.3 before starting to do the 32 bit port of the application. The only reason I think the 16 bit would work is that you will not be using the ACMSDI NT DLL but rather the old V2.0 Windows 16 bit DLL, so it more a question of how good the NT Windows on Windows emulation is rather than if the V2.0 product can support NT 4.0. The only way to know this for sure is for your customer to do the operational testing using their actual application code. > 2. Can ACMS Desktop Gateway 2.3 be used with ACMS 4.0-1 on VAX ? Yes, I don't keep track of ACMS versions, but if that is a version that is OK with ACMS engineering, it will be fine with the ACMSDI server. Regards Tom |
