2181.0. "DCE$DTSD won't start at boot time" by CSC32::J_MORTON (O8-OO-2b || ! 2b) Fri Mar 07 1997 12:13

Hi,

DCE V1.3B, VMS V6.1.

During DCE$STARTUP, at system startup time, dtsd will not stay running. The PID
is returned, then a "...dtsd is not running message" (see below).

If they manually type the RUN/DETACH command (as displayed) after the system
starts, dtsd comes up/runs fine.

TCP/IP (Multinet) is started before DCE.

There are no DCE$DTSD.OUT or DCE$DTSD.ERR files generated.

I had the customer try this -- No luck:

	Edit SYS$MANAGER:DCE$SETUP.COM
	Locate the line
        	$ Dts_Wait:
	and insert the following command on the next line:
        	$ Wait 00:00:03

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Jim

2181.1DTSD accounting record or audit recordsSTAR::SWEENEYMon Mar 10 1997 08:4611
If accounting is enabled, what is the process exit status?

Any audit alarms generated when the process starts?

If there is no accounting or auditing information available, try modifying
DCE$SETUP to produce a process dump for DTSD before startin DCE.

Thanks,

Dave

    Hi Dave,

    Here is some additional information: alarm, accounting, dce$setup
    with run/dump - However, no .dmp file was created. Do you know what
    directory it would have gone to?

    Thanks!

Hi,

    Here's some additional information (see below).

    Also, a correction to .0: DTSD will NOT start even after the system is
    up.

    I can dialin again tomorrow. I'm open to suggestions as to what else
    I might look at.

    Thanks,

2181.6Try to run DTSD interactivelySTAR::SWEENEYMon Mar 17 1997 17:2512
What's the protection on sys$system:dce$login.com?

Try running the Dce$Specific:[Var.Adm.Time]dce$dtsd.com procedure interactively
and settting the output the the Dce$Specific:[Var.Adm.Time] directory.

The RUN/DETACH is creating a separate process, we need to capture the SET watch
information for the process created, PID 2C400325, rather than the creating
process, DCE$SETUP.

Thanks,

Dave

    Hi,

    Any ideas as to why dtsd won't start when a RUN/DETACH is done
    would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

	check to make sure that the detached process has enough quotas, etc.
	(all of the VMS stuff) and privileges as well. look at the dcesetup.com
	to check the needed settings.

    It turns out that diskquotas were enabled and the DCE$SERVER
    account was over quota.

    fyi,
