Speaking of welfare - corporate, that is - there's a story on p. 3 of
today's B. Globe about just that: a new bipartisan coalition is trying to
tone down "the multi-billion dollar network of federal subsidies to US
businesses." It even includes Ralph Nader!

I guess someone thought it was only fair to take a look at such things, as
part of the ongoing attempt to balance the budget, to parallel cuts in the
likes of Aid to Families with Dependent Children..

It's fascinating to read the list of proposed 'targets' and learn just how

Now I haven't a clue about what her academic record looks like, or what

As I read the notes being refered to in .807 it was not an assertion presented
as a fact, but a speculation... the wording "It's more likely..." told me that.

So YOU have any facts to support that it wasn't her academic skills and
qualifications that got her into Harvard? How about YOU getting her SAT's...

I don't *care* about the details of why a particular student got into
Harvard. I hope she does well and enjoys her college years and that they
prepare her for a happy and prosperous life. That is what I think is
important.

I too think it is more likely that academic skills played a gating role
in her acceptance to Harvard.

The bit I read said Ms. Clinton was made the offer based solely
on test scores and academic standing, as part of Harvard's early
acceptance program.

(Though it's obvious that she's the president's daughter had an
impact of some kind -- we're sure not hearing about all the other
young folks who were offered early admission, are we? Good PR
strikes again. But it seems to me it's more a reflection on
Harvard than on Ms. Clinton and/or her parents.)

I tend to agree with meg that, in general, what's most important
in determining a kid's success in school is the kind of attitude
toward education and support the kid finds at home. Somehow, I'm
not entirely convinced that if the student body of the Sidwell
Friends School switched places with the student body of a DC public
high school, that the results would be appreciably different.
Would make an interesting experiment though.

From 475.807 -  WAHOO::LEVESQUE

First the challenge against the consideration that she *MAY* have gotten
in on her academic skills and the demand for proof when a speculative
statement has been made:

> >It's more likely that Chelsea has 1300+ SAT's
> Do you know that for a fact, or is it a convenient thing to assert to
> support your argument? What were her SATs?

Then there was the implication that she got in because of her parents "prestige
factor":

> ...between someone who's your average daughter of anonymous middle
> class americans and the daughter of the president, if there's one
> opening I can guess to whom virtually _any_ college will make the
> offer of acceptance.

I will agree that being the president's daughter is likely to have an
effect on entry into an education institution. However, since being a
public figure in such a closely watched family I have a hard time believing
that she would be allowed entry with substandard academics without that
being wildly called out in the press.

    >First the challenge against the consideration that she *MAY* have

Which I already stated was an incorrect interpretation of what I
    wrote.

    >and the demand for proof when a speculative statement has been made:

You use words quite casually. It was not a "demand." I asked if he
knew something to be the case or if he had speculated. That, Stephanie,
is not accurately characterized as "a demand for proof."

So far we have an incorrect interpretation and an inaccurate
characterization as the pillars of support for your contention. How
    convincing.

>Then there was the implication that she got in because of her parents "prestige
>factor":

> ...between someone who's your average daughter of anonymous middle
> class americans and the daughter of the president, if there's one
> opening I can guess to whom virtually _any_ college will make the
> offer of acceptance.

I like the way you selectively quote things, leaving out vital bits of
context. The "implication", as you put it was NOT that "she got in
because of her parents", it was that it was a helpful factor. Which you
freely admit here: "I will agree that being the president's daughter is
likely to have an effect on entry into an education institution." So
you actually agree with what I said (as opposed to what you seem to
think I meant by what I said.) So where's the beef, Stephanie? What's
the source of your hostility if it's not what I actually said?

    >However, since being a public figure in such a closely watched family I
    >have a hard time believing that she would be allowed entry with
    >substandard academics without that being wildly called out in the
    >press.

As it turns out, all that information is confidential and Harvard
strongly protects the privacy of its applicants. So the only way that
"the press" could "wildly call it out" is if someone had contacts in
the admission office or at the college boards, someone with both the
access to the information, and the motivation and lack of scruples to
release the information. So to me it's no surprise that Ms Clinton's
qualifications are not in the NYT. I'd be shocked if they were. It's
    none of the public's business.

And as for her qualifications, I would expect her to have gotten good
grades in school. After all, she goes to a private school with a
strong academic background, she has personal tutors, and neither of her
parents discounts the value of a good education. As for her SATs, I'd
expect that she's done well (having been well educated). So her
acceptance into Harvard is not terribly surprising. My only point is
that it's likely that Harvard had many other well qualified applicants,
some of whom probably didn't get in for lack of distinguishing factors.
All that was meant (which has already been explained and is quoted by
you as proving something else entirely) is that given an identical
application portfolio- same grades, same activities, same SATs
(whatever they may be), Chelsea Clinton would likely get the nod by
virtue of who she is and where she went to school. (At least in my
school, getting an A was more difficult than if I had continued
attending public schools, so all As are not created equal.)

I don't think that Chelsea Clinton was likely underqualified to attend
    Harvard. Comprends?

The third book was called "Xenocide". Yes, Orson Scott Card wrote
them. Ender's Game started as a novella, won a Hugo (fan award), was
expanded into a novel, won a Nebula (writer's award). I don't know if
I see such a strong parallel in this discussion, though- Ender's Game
was about training people to wage war from a very young age, with a
battle game, as a matter of species survival for humanity. The current
in-the-news item discusses a battle simulation for military training as
economically more affordable by codevelopment as a game. Economically,
gaming is making more money these days than do sales of recorded music,
a staggering amount of money. Its a cost-conscious training model.
In Ender's Game, the training was seen as the only effective way to
develop the requisite skills- a results-driven cost-blind model. They
    seem very different to me.
