88.91 | Acton Jazz Cafe - a cool place for music | MSBCS::SCHNEIDER | individually twisted | Mon Mar 03 1997 16:56 | 40 |
| I'd like to put in a good word here for a newish venue for music - the
Acton Jazz Cafe - that's doing some things that may be of interest to
WN'ers.
In particular, they have a series called (I think) Festival of Woman
Performers. Currently, there is an open mic event for women performers
on the first Sunday of each month from 6-9PM. Last night was the first
of these open mics. It was a pretty small turnout both for performers
and crowd, but nice nevertheless. (My vested interest: I'd like to see
this take off.)
Also, this month is Women in Music month (at least at AJC - is it
everywhere?), so the usual Wednesday acoustic open mics have women as
the featured performers. For example, Daring Angels on the 26th - yow!
The Wednesday open mics have sign-up at 7, start at 8, feature at 9.
$3 cover and pass-the-hat for the feature.
I'll quote from a flyer what seems to me like a fair description of the
AJC: "The cafe is a *non-smoking* (emphasis mine) listening room,
intimate and comfortable with 70 seats, a full bar, an artful,
reasonably priced full dinner menu... a real Yamaha baby grand..."
They have a pretty cool selection of microbrews, BTW - bottles only,
though.
The AJC is at 452 Great Road. This is Rte 2A/119, a bit east of the
Nagog Mall. The AJC is a little hard to spot - it's in the back of a
smallish strip mall called the Collage Mall. Phone 508-263-6161.
Oh, as you might guess, the rest of the musical fare at AJC runs to
jazz. I'm not up on that, so I can't comment - except that the
Saturday night acts are often on the bluesy side, and the one of those
events that I've been to was also enjoyable.
Please feel free to forward this info. (Hints: maybe Justine Sullivan?
Also maybe the DECplus folks - the open mic for women is definitely
meant to be Lesbian-friendly.)
Cheers,
Chuck
(no financial interest in AJC, honest)
