After reviewing this conference, it seems that SONY is the only choice left for 8mm. There are not any entried made after 1995. I am considering Canon ES900 vs Sony TRV32. Canon ES900 Pros: Cheaper by about $200 Optical stabilizer Optical 20X zoom HiFi Stereo FlexiZone zoom Colour view-finder Better lense ? SONY TRV32 Pros: 3" LCD panel + BW view-finder Electronic stabilizer I already have Sony batteries from my dead camcorder (F70) Auto-date (with Canon you need to turn it on/off manually) My assumption with Sony is that it will come on for first 5 seconds of recording. Built-in lense cap (with Canon, you still have the lense cap hanging by a string! For crying out loud it is 1997 :-) Flying Erase Head (I am assuming it is there with Canon; otherwise Canon will be out of picture) No chance of Sony getting out of Camcorder business in near future. Given that I will have to spend more on Canon to get extra batteries (at least +$50) on Canon, I will be saving about $150 with Canon but will lose the 3" LCD panel. Any comments or recommendation on either of these cameras?

There are several makers of 8mm camcorders - but people don't write much about them here. Sony and Canon are the market leaders. I still have the Sony CCD-V9 I bought in 1988 or so. Steve | |||||

Well, to close the topic (especially given the fear that the topic might just start generating numerous replies which I might not be able to count on my right hand thumb :-) I picked up a cheap Sony TR64 for $360.00 locally at Macy's. Apart from the color viewfinder and remote controller; it is absolutely a no-frills machine i.e. has no image stabilizer or built in LCD-color monitor. This allows me to consider JVC GR-DV1 type of digital camcorder within next year or two when it drops bellow its current four figure price. - Vikas |
