596.0. "HELSINKI-FJORDS" by DV780::JAKUBOWSKI () Tue May 21 1996 17:20

I am taking a cruise that stays in Helsinki for one day. I would like
to either be able to take a ride through the Fjords or go hiking in the
mountains. Does any one know of a tour company that would go through
the fjords and come back in the same day or is there public
transportation to a mountain or park area? I believe we arrive at 8:30
in the morning and leave about 6:00 p.m. I arrive at the port on the
Royal Carribean ship. They have side trips they offer, but mostly
museums and I want to see the wilderness. 0000000F

    Any ideas are welcome.

If my understanding of Finnish geography is correct, there are no
fjords or moutains near Helsinki. However, there are lots and
    lots of lakes!

I'll leave it to someone more knowledgable to provide you with
suggestions on what you could do.

I was once in Helsinki for a day and I did visit some museums.
I was very impressed with the National Museum of Fine Arts (I think
that's what it's called). Well worth visiting. If I remember
correctly, it's on a square, near the train station.

Wilderness is a bit hard to find near Helsinki, and your short visit
    doesn't allow travelling very far.

Fastest way to find wilderness is to go to one of the islands near
Helsinki. There are several boat charters that do this (although it is
a bit costly). And, you can go to some of the islands using boats that
    shuttle back and forth.

Another idea is to spend an outdoor day on Suomenlinna island, which is
a historical fortress island quite near Helsinki. If the weather is
good this is a wonderfull way to spend a day.
