To: List for those interested in things Swedish
    Subject: Our precious youth

I recently received a folder from Svenska Institutet in Stockholm. The
folder is called "Svenska ungdomar bera:ttar" and the content is mainly
interviews with and stories about representatives of the Swedish youth.
It is a neat and interesting folder that also includes a lot of
recently collected statistics. I would like to share an excerpt of
these statistics with you on this list, so here you go:

    * 80% of all girls and 63% of all boys are willing to REDUCE their own
standard of living in order to save the environment.

    * 78% of all children (under 18) live together with both their
    biological
    parents.

    * 50% of all teenagers have access to a summerhouse, second house (i.e.
    fritidshus).

*78% of all children born in Sweden are baptized in the Lutheran state
church (Svenska kyrkan) and 55% of all 15-year olds are confirmed.

    * Only 8% of Swedish teenagers say they are out of money all the time.
57% say they never or rarely lack money.

    * Of students in ninth grade (15-16 years old), 78% have tried alcohol,
23% have tried cigarettes and 5% have tried drugs.

    * The ten most practiced sports (ages 7-25) are, in order: Soccer (that
is REAL football), Horseback riding, Icehockey, tennis, Swimming,
Handball, Gymnastics, Track&Fields, Indoor Bandy (innebandy) and
    Basketball.

    * 43% of 16-24year olds are members in a sports club (idrottsfo:rening)
and 10-15% are members in an environmental or solidarity organization.
Only a few percent are active in a church (or other religious
    organization) or a political party.

    * 11-15year olds watch Tv approximately 105 minutes per day. For
16-19year olds that number is 90 minutes.

*50% of the girls and 40% of the boys are or have been sexually active
    at the age of 17.

*Mandatory sex education was introduced in Swedish schools in 1956.

    The folder is published by:
    Svenska Institutet, Box 7434, 103 91 Stockholm. Phone: +46-8-789 20 00.
NOTE: The folder is written entirely in Swdedish.
