587.0. "Taiteiden Y" by ELIS::LEE () Tue Jul 11 1995 04:50

    Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me with some information.

I heard about a Finnish festival called Taiteiden Y, held in August,
which I would like to try and work into my holiday this year. I rang
the Finnish tourist bureau in Amsterdam (where I live) and they've
never heard of it. Could it be really small scale only ?

Would anyone be able to post the dates of the festival on this
    notesfile ?

    Thanks in advance.

587.1The tourist bureau publishes the list, they should knowTLE::SAVAGETue Jul 11 1995 14:495
Well, I can confirm that the name doesn't come even close to any of the
names of Finnish festivals on the event list I have. Some of the
well-known ones held in August are (in sequential order): Lahti, Turku,
Tampere, and Helsinki. All are essentially musical, except the one in
    Tampere focuses on dramatic arts.

	Sim, you haven't been mistaken!

Taiteiden Y (Night of Arts) is a part of Helsingin Juhlaviikot -
festival. Taiteiden Y takes a place at the center of Helsinki City,
and within one day and night there are lot, lot, lot everykind
of art (music, classical and pop, happenings, museums, theatre,
poetry, performance, just name it) on the streets, theatres, stores,
restaurants etc. Also food and beer. Bookstores, galleriums etc.
are open through the night. One bad thing is that you just can't
	see and here everything.

It starts 31-Aug. and if I remember right, it's seventh time at this
	year.

This year should be more modern (=something new), because Art Director
is Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the whole coordinating group is quite young.

They don't have yet the brochure with schedule, but it will be
	released about 15-Aug.

If you are coming, be awared to be wake up whole night...

   Asko,

Thank you very much for responding. In the meantime I had rung the
Helsinki tourist office and found out the date as well.

I'm looking very forward to coming to Finland. I've never been there
   before.
