569.0. "Commercial fishing, etc." by LEVEL4::RFPL::SWANSON (Larry - LEVEL4 Engineering) Wed Jul 27 1994 02:44

We'll be in NW Denmark, near Hjrring, for two weeks at the end of August.

Somewhere I read that it's possible to go out on a fishing boat to watch
how they work. The idea wasn't to fish oneself, but to see and experience
how the commercial fishermen work.

The book or article suggested simply asking a fisherman if he'd let you go
along to watch. Has anybody done this or know whether it can be done?

Does anybody have insider tips about good places to eat or *special* things
to do or see in the northern half of DK, which may not be mentioned in the
typical guide books (ex. things that Danish people would do or places they
go that "tourists" rarely go to)? I know that's a pretty general question,
but it's hard to be specific since we're open to all sorts of things:
Maybe places to walk, drive, picnic, out of the ordinary museums,
restaurants, etc.

This will be our second trip up there. We enjoyed it last time and are
looking forward to this trip a lot!

Thanks,

Larry

    Hi Larry,

I imagine that people who work in the shops in northwestern DK would be
willing to suggest special things to do or see - that may not be
mentioned in the tourist guide books.

As for going out on a working fishing boat, this would be rare in the
United States. The work is not without danger from accidents - and that
means liability. Maybe Denmark is not as litigation-crazy as the USA,
and the DK fishermen have not had any bad experiences with 'unofficial
    observers'.

I found two related things.

Once a week the North Sea Museum in Hirtshals offers a free tour of the
harbour which includes a look at fishing boats and their equipment.

They also offer a half-day trip along the west coast in a fishing boat from
which you yourself can fish. This would have cost about DEK 150.
