566.0. "HELP needed with translation/language" by CNTROL::ROBERTSON () Mon Jun 27 1994 15:46

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone in this conference can help me.
My teacher gave the class a phrase and said that if anyone
can tell him what language it is and what it says, they can
have an A for the class. The class is Business Writing and
    Reports, INT. The phrase is:

    "ZAZPIAK BAT"

I have been searching everywhere for the translation of this!
All I know at this point is that it is not Tagalog (a language
    of the Philipines).

As anyone seen it before, or know where I can look it up?

    thanks, patty

All I can say is that it is not any known Scandinavian language (living
or dead) - and probably not an Indo-European language at all.

Yes, I am finding that very few languages have a Z in their alphabet.
(You'd think that would make it easier for me....HA!)

    thanks for your help!!

I've been told that this is being pursued more actively in some other
notesfile, and that the prevalent thought is that this is English and
that "zazpiak" means indoor baseball. I don't know where that
discussion is, or whether this explanation was accompanied by a smiley
    face symbol. :-)

    re: .3

Yes, I asked about it in ASKENET and (EURO_ASK, and ASIA, and MANILA,
    and STAR_TREK....)anywhere I think I might find a lead.

I'm hoping that it does mean indoor baseball; then my search is over!!
But, if so, why isn't it in the English Dictionary? (I asked that
question in ASKENET, but got no answer.)

I guess it's back to the library for me!!! If anyone has an idea as to
what I can do to find this, I'm listening!!!

I got a little more info last night. ZAZPIAK BAT! is an expression.
I kinda thought so because of the exclamation point. So, it's probably
safe to say that the definition is not indoor baseball.

    The search continues......

Does anyone out there speak Czech? I was told that it might be this
in another notes file. Can anyone add to this? patty

<<< it sure sounds Slavic! Could be the Czech language, says my wife.
<<< We had a good laugh at what it could mean. This ranges from
<<< (and you pick the best! :-))
    <<<
    <<< - be silent!
    <<< - start to sing!
    <<< - get drunk!
    <<<
<<< Honestly: there are roots for all three meanings there.

ZAZPIAK BAT!

The language is Basque and its literal meaning is "the seven into one".

Zazpi means seven
bat means one

A Zazpiak bat is a shield commonly made of seven layers of leather.
(The seven into one for strength)

Basque is located in Southern France/Northern Spain.
The French consider Basque part of France and the Spanish
consider it part of Spain. But Basque wants to be its
own identity. They speak three languages, French, Spanish, and
Basque. The Basque language is considered to be made up of French
and Spanish, but it is not!

There are seven "counties" (for lack of a better word)
that make up Basque, and they wish to be considered one.

This information comes from "A Comparitive Study of Basque and Greek
Vocabulary" ....I didn't catch the authors name.

The majority of Jai aLai players are from Basque. So....if you ever run
into one, they will be most impressed if you say Zazpiak Bat!

Never yell this in a Spanish airport.

Wanting to get this thread back to a topic closer to Norden, let me
just comment that you'd be safer yelling this if you were a clearly
Scandinavian-looking person than if you looked at if you might be
    Basque. :-)
