565.0. "Visiting Sweden..." by MARVIN::MORRELL (Here comes my baby... walking back to me) Sun Jun 12 1994 08:32

My brother & I wouldn't mind visiting Sweden at some time in the
future... we'll be travelling from England & we'd preferably want to
    bring our own car...

Does anyone know the cheapest way of travelling from England to
Sweden... what are the car ferry routes to/from Sweden.. what prices are
the hotels/hostels since we'll be an a reasonably tight budget etc..

We're are the best places to visit.. etc.. Does the majority of the
population speak English cos I don't speak a lot of Swedish ( Apart
from doing my Swedish Chef Muppet impressions... ;->>> )

    	Thanks,

    	Rick

P.S. What are the chances of getting work in Sweden once it joins
    the European Community?

    >...the best places to visit.. etc..

See the soc.culture.nordic FAQ (note 245.6) - there are many notes in
this conference about tourist attractions in various parts of Sweden.

    >Does anyone know the cheapest way of travelling from England to
    >Sweden...

Probably by train through the Netherlands and Denmark.

    >what are the car ferry routes to/from Sweden...

You'd have to come through some other country, such as Norway or
    Denmark.

    >Does the majority of the population speak English ...

It might seem so to a traveller. Students are taught English as a
second language beginning in the elementary grades. Bank tellers and
airline counter clerks especially can conduct transactions in English
and so can a great many sales clerks in the shops of the larger cities.
Swedes watch a lot of english language television and can be assumed to
understand your speech, even if they don't choose to answer you (in
    English or Swedish).

Using US presidents as a comparison, Swedes are more like ('Silent
Cal') Coolidge than Bill Clinton. Taciturnity is a cultural norm.

    >I don't speak a lot of Swedish (Apart from doing my Swedish Chef Muppet
    >impressions...

A few well-chosen phrases will do it for you (see note 7). If you try
"bork, bork, bork!" I don't imagine many would get that this is funny
    to an US muppet fan.

Or try one of the coach companies that leave from the Victoria
     Bus terminal in London.

	Hej!

> You'd have to come through some other country, such as Norway or
> Denmark.

There's a ferry line from UK to Gothenburg. I don't know the name
of the company. I think the ferries leaves from Felixtowe (they did
	so some years ago).

We've seen the muppets here as well. A Swede would probably recognize
you as beeing a muppet-fan but there's not a single Swedish word in
the phrases used by the chief (don't try it).

Besides, probably every Swede understands English and are able to
speak it, except older people out in the country. They will also
be able to answer you. There's no communication problems ahead...

	Nice parts to visit:

	* The mountain area. Very good cross country skiing resorts and down
hill slopes during the winter. In the summer, you can walk around
with your back pack and a tent.

	* The arkipelago (Stockholm area). 20000+ islands of wich you can
	  visit many by boat.

	* The two islands land and Gotland. Very nice nature and extremely
	  good beaches.

	regards

	Staffan

If I decided to come by train... what is the public transport system
like... are there Trains, Buses to most areas of Sweden...

    Rick.
565.5Modern public transport systemTLE::SAVAGETue Jun 14 1994 12:5614
    >...what is the public transport system like...

Exceptional - by USA standards anyway, about the same as in the UK. You
should use it as much as possible to get around - until you make some
contacts to take you where you want to go by private automoble.

    >...are there Trains, Buses to most areas of Sweden...

Yes; and the railway systems are much more passenger-minded than in the
US (cf. Amtrak for example) - all the cities and larger towns are
served by the Swedish Railway (SJ). And don't forget the light rail
commuter lines - especially in Stockholm metropolitan area - very
    modern and enjoyable.

There are car ferries run by Scandinavian Seaways.

Harwich - Gothenburg Tu & Sun

      Newcastle - Gothenburg Fri

      Return days I don't know.

Cost: One way roughly 60 quid for the car and 60 quid per person for the
      cabin.

There are very few places left for this summer.

Your local travel agent should have more info.

      If not Scandinavian Seaways' HQ has telephone # 01046-31 65 06 50.

      Cheers,

P.S. I have done the trip many tims having me in-laws on the Wirral in
      Cheshire.

    re .4:

Bus and train service is very good in sweden.

If you intend to use the train then you might be interested in the
'Nordtourist' ticket. It is good for three weeks of unlimited travel
on almost all trains in scandinavia. A number of ferries will also offer
    special rates with this ticket.

It should be available in the UK as well. At least we were able to buy
    it in advance in Germany.

    Regards,

    Klaus
