560.0. "100 Languages" by OTOOA::ESKICIOGLU (where's hareket, there's bereket) Mon Feb 07 1994 19:40
{ posted in many international conferences }
Good Day, Good People,
For my daughter's school project we are trying to collect a few
words/terms in as many languages as we can. We need:
- One hundred (yes, the number 100)
- Please
- Thank you
- Welcome
- I love you
The following is an incomplete list of languages we think that
exist. We are also trying to expand the list as close to
"complete" as possible.
Afghani, Albanian, Amharie, Amoy-Swatow Chinese, Arabic,
Armenian, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Cayuga, Cree,
Croation, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Eastern Hindi, English, Estonian,
Finnish, French, Gejerati, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi,
Hungarian, Indonesian, Innuttitut, Italian, Japanese, Javanese,
Khmer, Korean, Kurdish, Lao, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian,
Macedonian, Mandarin, Marathi, Mohawk, Norwegian, Ojibway,
Papiamento, Persian/Farsi, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian,
Russion, Serbian, Singhalese, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Spanish,
Swedish, Telugu, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Tigrigna, Turkish,
Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Wu (Shaghai) Chinese
We are trying to come up with 100 languages and so far my list is
at 69.
So, if you know how to say "hundred", "please", "thanks",
"welcome" and "I love you" in any of the languages listed
above or in any other language, then please write to me.
If you don't know, then forward this message to someone
who might know, post it in notes conferences, ask a colleague,
ask a neighbour or ask your kids' friends.
For every language you will get a big warm hug from an adorable 8
year old.
Please specify the language in your reply and what word is the
equivalent of what. These things are not immediately obvious to
me you know. We will also accept dialects if they differ in writing.
If the language is not printable on a North American keyboard,
then you can fax me your answers at dtn 633-3701 or at
613-723-3701. We need to finish the project by Thursday.
Thank you very much
Danke Schn
Merci
Gracias

Thanks to all who replied via mail or in the notes conferences.
One of the repliers said "what a sly way of getting 'I love you'
letters from all over the world" ;-) Yes, indeed, I did get many
"I love you" letters written in many different languages or dialects.

ASL |
American Signed Language|
hundred - first sign "one" (make fist,
with index finger pointing up) then sign
"c" (curve fingers opposite a curved
thumb--looks like a "c")
please - I don't know if there is an
exact equivalent for this word in ASL.
The closest I can find is 'ask', signed
by putting hands in prayer formation
(open palms placed against each other)
and drawing them towards the body.
thanks - place tips of open hands
against mouth and throw them forward,
similar to throwing a kiss. One hand
can be used instead of both.
welcome - bring right hand towards body
with the palm facing up.
I love you - right hand in front of
body, palm facing down, with the thumb,
index finger, and pinkie extended, and
the other two fingers folded. (This is a
combination sign of the letters 'I',
'L', and 'Y')
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I did not include the following list sent by a kind colleague,
since it would be impossible to find the words for all of these
dialects in such a short time:
>There were a number of American Indian tribes in the US who spoke different
>dialects: Algonquin, Penobscot, Abanaki, Micmac, Nipmuk, Passamaquoddy,
>Narranganset, Massachuset, Oneida, Seneca, Iroquois, susquehanna, Monacan,
>Cherokee, Shawnee, Chickasaw, Creek, Pensacola, Apache, Mescalero, Crow,
>Cheyenne, Pawnee, Navaho, Ute, Arapaho, Shoshoni, Blackfoot, Mandan, Zuni.
Million thanks for the help. Easynet has done it once again. I love this
network (and I can say that in a variety of languages now).
I love you all

I have been bombarded by mail messages from all over the world. Thank you
so much. The response was massive. I am overwhelmed. As a by-product of
my daughter's school project, I have received many "I love you" letters
written in all sorts of exotic languages. I love you too. Thanks so much.
I never thought this would generate this much attention.
Below is the list close to the final version. I realize that there are many
more to add and a bunch of words might have been spelled incorrectly. But
I have to stop somewhere. Please do not send any more mail messages, I simply
can't keep up with them anymore.
My daughter is not yet 8 years old and she is going to second grade. I am
sure she will be more than satisfied with what mommy has done to help her
with her project. This is not her doctorate thesis, the below list will
just have to do, otherwise I will get fired ;-)
Some of you have asked where I was located. I live in Ottawa, Canada, the
country with the coldest winters. The Turkish language in the below list
were provided by me ;-)
Special thanks to the person who provided the sign language, which is at the
bottom of the list. Does anybody know any extraterrestrial languages?
No, no, just kidding, lets not get into that.
Peace
Lale

ASL |
American Signed Language|
hundred - first sign "one" (make fist,
with index finger pointing up) then sign
"c" (curve fingers opposite a curved
thumb--looks like a "c")
please - I don't know if there is an
exact equivalent for this word in ASL.
The closest I can find is 'ask', signed
by putting hands in prayer formation
(open palms placed against each other)
and drawing them towards the body.
thanks - place tips of open hands
against mouth and throw them forward,
similar to throwing a kiss. One hand
can be used instead of both.
welcome - bring right hand towards body
with the palm facing up.
I love you - right hand in front of
body, palm facing down, with the thumb,
index finger, and pinkie extended, and
the other two fingers folded. (This is a
combination sign of the letters 'I',
'L', and 'Y')
