| The Gta Canal also might be suitable for canoeing. See note 278.
Sweden has mosquitoes. I don't remember that they are a serious
problem. I was in various places, including Dalsland, in summer and
didn't think the local people had much to complain about - compared to
the Maine woods!

allemansrtt - the right of common access, to move freely in nature so
long as you do no damage. But for example, you can pick berries and
wildflowers in the forest but not on cultivated land or in municipal
parks.
So if you know 'low impact' camping techniques (leave nothing but your
footprints) you are probably OK sleeping away from organized campsites.
>What's about animals (bears)?
You'd have to go out of your way to find any.

| Gerhard,
I certainly think that you should canoe in Dalsland. I did it many
years ago, 1967 I think, during 14 days and really enjoyed it. Since
that time I have done several short trips in other areas in Sweden but
certainly Dalsland is the best place to go if you want to stay 14 days
in the same area. I really enjoy reading the maps in advance and try to
find out the most exiting way to go and the find out on site how your
imagination fit with reality.
When I did the canoeing in Dalsland I started in rgng, passed several
lakes, carried the canoe 50 meter here, 500 m there,1 km there and went
over to Norway (Glomma), passed Halden and ended up in Strmstad on the
Swedish West coast.
We do not consider flies any problem normally (if you are not
especially sensible to them). They normally annoy you most in late July
and August.
If you like to be really alone I suggest that you canoe in early June
or late August. Late May is normally very nice from the weather point
of view but the water is cold. In August you can find different kind of
mushrooms and berries that you can pick and prepare on your own.
Animals is no problem at all.
Today there exist several prepared places where you can put up your
tent and use open fire in a safe way. If you want there are many
possibilities to find your "own", very nice site for lunch or for stay
over night.
Feel free to call me or ask more over the net.
