538.0. "Women's Voting Rights" by PERSKY::CHAPITIS () Fri Feb 19 1993 14:44

I'm trying to get some information about the recent history of
the right to vote for women in a Scandanavian country. I remember
having a conversation with someone who told me one of the Scandanavian
countries (can't remember which one specifically) either did not
allow women to vote, or only fairly recently (last 20 years or so)
gave women the right to vote. Is this at all correct, and if so, which
country and what are the details, or is this totally off the wall?
        Thanks for any info.

    Hi,

Here in Sweden women got the right to vote in 1921, in Denmark 1915
and Norway 1913. Could it be that you are getting Sweden and Switzerland
mixed up? Switzerland is a very conservative country and they didn't
allow women to vote until 1971 on federal level. In fact one part
of Switzerland (Appenzell) did not give their women voting rights until
    last year.

  >...Switzerland is a very conservative country...

  - We (swiss) don't have any Queen or other royality stuff...
  - We have a woman in our "7 head" government...
  - Switzerland as a service center (banking,...) of worldwide renown...
  - Switzerland = independence...
  - ....

would this all be possible in a very conservative country ???

   > ...one part of Switzerland (Appenzell)...

  - In our small country we have four languages (german, french, italien, roman)
and lot of different cultures. It is very difficult to convince all the 6
    mio. swiss of something.
But you have to, because we not just vote for persons to sit in a parliament
we also have the right to vote for special things.

For example: Two years ago we could vote if we din't want our army any
                 longer ....!!!!!!
