Subject: Browning-Ferris acquires Finland waste company
Date: Fri, 22 Jan 93 14:06:04 PST
HOUSTON (UPI) -- Browning-Ferris Industries Inc. Friday announced its
subsidiary, Browning-Ferris Industries Europe Inc., has acquired the
Helsinki-based Finnish waste company Somero-Yhtiot.
The acquisition adds a new country to the Houston-based BFI's
international operations. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Somero, founded in 1964 by Matti Somero, has waste collection
operations in Helsinki and two suburbs. The company provides waste
collection services for more than 1 million people.
Its business is both residential collection of municipal solid waste
under contract, and commercial and industrial collection. Somero will be
a subsidiary of BFI-Europe.
Eric A. Black, president of BFI- Europe, said, ``I am pleased that we
gain the advantage of having the founder, Matti Somero, remaining on the
Somero board of directors and becoming active in BFI-Europe's market
development efforts in Scandinavia. Pasi Somero, his son, will remain as
manager of Somero, giving BFI-Europe continuity of management in this
new market.''
BFI has operations in the United States and Canada, Australia, Hong
Kong, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, the
United Kingdom and Venezuela.
Subsidiaries and affiliates collect, transport, treat and dispose of
commercial, residential and municipal solid waste and industrial wastes.
BFI subsidiaries are also involved in recycling, resource-recovery
facilities, medical-waste services, portable-restroom services, and
municipal8 and commercial-sweeping operations.
