516.0. "single rear brake lights in scan?" by RTOEU::CLEIGH (Keine Ahnung) Fri Aug 28 1992 06:41

I have seen a bunch of Scandinvian registered Volvos (and one UK registered
one) driving on the Autobahn near Munich. They all have the single
middle brake light in the back window like US vehicles. Are these brake
lights allowed in the scan. countries? Must they now be there? Etc.
Status please on laws about this.

Thanks
Chad

    Chad,

According to my knowledge (I moved away from Sweden 6 months ago)
brake lights like that are definitly allowed. You do not have to
have them but they do help showing the other people behind you that
    	you're stepping on the pedal.

Most cars that I've seen in Sweden do not have these lights by
default. You would usually buy and install them yourself. I've
found them quite useful when driving behind someone, especially in
    	a lot of traffic.

I believe that, in Sweden. The brake lights are required on cars
manufactured after 198?. They sure are a good thing. Do you know
that a Swedish insurance company (Folksam) has started to put "black
boxes" in cars... To help them follow-up on car crashes. They claim to
be first with this. The funny thing is that the first manufacturer
to install this thing in cars sold in Sweden isn't SAAB or Volvo
but a Japanese manufacturer... Anyone knows if this kind of thing is
installed in other countries than Sweden?

    	/Kjell

In Finland brake-lights are permitted, and most car manufacturers have
them as standard option. [By the way, few years back they were
prohibited - now they are recommended.]

Digital, as part of car policy, has them on all compny cars.

What does "just allowed" mean please?

The TV told me I had to disable mine last December as it was a "safety
hazard." The car was a Golf GL US model (RIP).

Anyway, I knew this was coming to the rest of the world, not just US and
Canada, and wanted to see what our Northern friends were doing. The Germany
news is news indeed. I was going to use the Scan news to speculate that through
the EG/EU that Germany would have to adopt them eventually, seems like
they decided to a wee bit sooner.

Thanks all for the info

Chad

maybe all those Chrysler cars I see around here with non-functioning lights
may start lighting up!

I only saw the headline in the 'Abendzeitung' a few days ago - didn't
read the article, so I don't know if it's in effect already or not.
