500.0. "Finding Ancestral Tree in Norden" by BOSACT::HELVE (ALL-IN-*what?*) Fri Jan 17 1992 14:36

I would like to try and build my family tree. All of my grandparents
came from Finland through Ellis Island (where their names are
inscribed), and I am trying to dig up information from relatives here
but the information is somewhat sketchy.

My question: Is there any organization in Finland that might help me
find more information ?? How might I contact them to find out what
they need to begin such a search ??

Anyone with any ideas on how to go about such a task would be greatly
    appreciated !!!!

I'm sure someone in Finland can give you more info. Traditionally, in
Finland, the church maintains the registers; if you can find out
whereabouts in Finland you grandparents came from, contacting the
Parish or prest's office should do the trick.

You might also try the FNO conference (HSK01::FNO) - it's mostly in
Finnish but enquiries in English are also welcome.

    Hi,

The Finnish/American newspaper - Raivaija - out of Fitchburg had an
article last week (I think it was last weeks) about trying to help
Finnish Americans find their roots. I will see if I can find it.

I know I tend to be pedantic, but I think it's called 'Raivaaja'...

500.4Sorry for the spelling...NURSE::BURACKNot Fade AwayTue Jan 21 1992 09:477
    Hi,

I knew I would spell that wrong.. sorry (I haven't been practicing my
finnish lately). I think my copy went out with the trash this morning.
If you call them, I am sure they will give you the information.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!! I will (slowly but surely) put my
nose to the grindstone on this project.

And I will start by calling that newspaper !!

    Thanks again,
    K.

500.7another way to get the mormon geneological libraryRTOEU::CLEIGHKeine AhnungWed Jan 29 1992 12:1412
Another way of contacting the Mormon Churches
geneological offices is to find your local "ward"
or "branch" (look in the phone book under Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). There is often
a geneological library usually associated with each
"stake."

Chad

a "ward" or "branch" or local congregations, a "stake"
is a regional organization composed of several wards
and/or branches.

In case some of you didn't know about this newsgroup and are interested
in Norwegian genealogy, I thought I'd mention no.slekt. Most if not
all postings are in Norwegian, many deal with looking for various
relatives, farmsteads, information. Probably would provide good
contacts for genealogists in North America. Also information on
several computer-genealogy programs available in Norway.
