A [storm with hurricane-force winds] swept over Northwestern Norway
yesterday (New Year Day) with wind [gusts] up to 100 knots !
There have been severe damages, especially in the Mre og Romsdal
district. Roofs were blown off the houses, cars turned around, trees
fell down, small boats were crushed against the shore, even a large
fishing ship was carried far up on land by the waves and the wind.
In Aalesund people were adviced by radio messages not to leave their
house. Most large windows were broken in the town centre. In Molde
parts of the hospital had to be evacuated because the building nearly
fell apart.
But fortunately, nobody was killed ! Almost unbelievable when you see
the destroyed houses. Even seamen on boats that sunk were rescued by
helicopter.
Insurance companies estimate that the damages will cost about $100
million dollars. This storm is one of the worst in this century,
probably worse than the great storm in fall 1987.

...the winds were the highest ever recorded in Norway. That's saying
something; parts of coastal Norway are damned windy.
Trondheim got lucky. There was damage here, but nothing serious, and
we even had electrical power the whole time. Large sections of Moere
og Romsdal lost theirs, not too far to the south....
