497.0. "Winter driving tips Sweden/Finland" by COPCLU::GEOFFREY (RUMMEL - The Forgotten American) Fri Jan 03 1992 09:01

Hello,

I will be driving to Helsinki in March for a christening and I
need some info:

1) How long does it take to drive to Stockholm from Helsingborg
assuming decent road conditions? Is it motorway the whole
way? Are the roads cleared or snowpacked? Are the speed limits
still only 90 kph in Sweden?

2) What do the ferries cost to Finland (1 car, 2 adults, 2 kids)?
I hear there is a cheap ferry to Turku. Is this true? How far
is Turku from Helsinki by car? How long is the ferry ride?

3) How far is it from Slen to Helsingborg by car? (We plan to go
skiing there after the christening.) What are the road
   conditions like in Slen?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

Geoff

Send ALL-IN-1 mail to MATKATOIMISTO @FNO. It's our local travel agency
(Suomen Matkatoimisto) and they can tell you the prices of the ferry
rides. And also how log it takes. Remember to buy tax-free liquors from
the ferry - you'll be surprised to the the prices here in Finland and
    Sweden :^( .

From Turku to Helsinki it's about 200 kms. Remember that gas/petrol
costs about 4FIM/liter here, so driving is not cheap...

In the beginning of March the roads are still mainly snowy but the
spring is about to start at that time so you may be able to survive
with summer tires (that your car probaly has).

    Feel free to ask more.

Bur aren't snow tyres *mandatory* in the winter period? (Which would
    probably include March in Helsinki).

Snow tyres are mandatory in December, January and February in Finland.

Driving from Helsingborg - Stockholm takes about 6 - 7 hours.
You will only find motorways outside bigger towns, the rest are
highways (one lane with a smaller "overtaking lane" on the inside).

To go from Helsingborg - Slen would probably take about 12 hours,
but I guess it depends on what road you choose to take. I've only
driven Stockholm - Slen and it used to take about 6 hours.

Slen isn't the Alpes when it comes to the slopes....but they do
    have snow :-).
