485.0. "Longboats come to D.C." by FASDER::MTURNER (Mark Turner * DTN 425-3702 * MEL4) Mon Sep 30 1991 13:24

Miss the excitement of a good Viking raid? Well, those days are past,
but three replica Viking ships, reputed to be very beautiful, are coming
    to Washington.

I carefully managed to leave the details at home, but here's what I
remember: the ships will arrive at 11:00 on 9-Oct and leave on the
morning of 14-Oct. They'll be welcomed at a ceremony featuring
the queen of Norway and the president of Iceland. Walter Mondale,
fabled in many a saga, will be master of ceremonies.

The ships will be at the K Street harbor in Georgetown; I think that's
the site of the Marine barracks. It won't be possible to go on the
ships, but supposedly visitors will be able to see everything from the
piers. The Smithsonian is offering tours, but they're already booked.

If/when I manage to bring in the brochure and schedule, I'll post more
info. Meanwhile, to find out more, a good idea would be to call the
embassies of Iceland and/or Norway, the countries sponsoring the event.
They'll answer your questions and send you material directly.

    		Embassy of Norway:	(202) 333-6000

Sorry, I forgot to ask if the boats are coming to any other american
cities. If someone finds out, could you please post the info as a
    reply?

According to the article cited in note 53.14, this would be the last
    stop in North America.

Oops -- sorry I missed the earlier note.

    A few further details:

. There'll be a program at the Smithsonian on "The Viking Expansion
Westward" covering Viking culture and history. This will take
place 5-Oct. It's an all-day program which costs $66 to the
general public (i.e. non-members of the Smithsonian Resident
    	  Associate Program).

. The ships' arrival will be followed by music and dance
performances featuring "Icelandic music group and Norwegian
    	  Hardingfiddlers and folk dancers."

I notice that the itinerary included a visit to Lerwick in the
Shetlands. Don't the Shetlanders have a cermony of dragging replica
Viking ships through the town and burning them on their main holiday,
    Apellya(sp?)?

When the ships where in Boston, Stmbandet sang at the festivities.
One of the Icelandic sailors couldn't come to hear us sing, even though
we were singing his most favorite Icelandic song. So, after our
performance we went over to sing to him and he insisted we sing on the
boat! It's georgous us close. Lots of nice detail work. After that,
he let us inside the cabin so that he could give us some notes on some
good Icelandic music that we can order. The inside doesn't look as
authentic as the outside. Stove, microwave, TV, etc. (you get the
idea) It was small and two people had to live in a space about 8'x10'!
This was one of the smaller boats also.

It was very nice. I wish I could have spent more time checking
    everything out though!

The Saga Sigler and the Oseberg sank in rough weather Sunday off the
coast of Spain. They were on their way to participate in the World's
Fair in Seville. The 11 crew members were rescued by search vessels.

I heard on the radio some seconds ago that Saga Siglar has been
located, and that they plan to rescue the wreckage.
