| I am taking Ballroom dancing lessons, and I am interested in the
locales in or around the following that I can find clubs where this
form of dancing is done. Oslo, Lillehammer, Stavanger, Trondheim, and
Bergen. I will be coming over of the 1994 winter games, and I would
like to have an idea where to go for dancing.
Hours and days of operation would be nice as well as names of the
clubs and the locations.
Takk
Dave

Karin Brennesvik's Second Annual Telemark Ski/Dance Week
February 19-28, 1993
Rjukan Fjellstue, Tinn, Telemark, Norway
Karin Brennesvik is organizing a week-long course in Telespringar and
Tinnspringar for folk dance and ski enthusiasts at one of Telemark's
best cross-country and downhill ski resorts, the Rjukan Fjellstue.
Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy both cross-country and
downhill skiing each day, plus classes in the oldest traditional folk
dance of the region. Each evening will have a traditional dance party
with live music by Telemark's best hardingfele players.
The Rjukan Fjellstue is located high on the Hardanger Plateau above
the town of Rjukan. The Fjellstue is a modern ski lodge built in the
old folk style, furnished with beautiful examples of traditional folk
art and antiques. Miles of groomed cross-country trails start just
outside the back door, with a downhill area a short distance away and
others conveniently reached by ski commuter bus. Lighted trails are
available for night skiing, and back-country enthusiasts can ski all
types of terrain and climb to experience stunning vistas. Ski
equipment rentals (both cross-country and downhill) and lessons for
both beginners and more advanced are provided by the Fjellstue.
Participants are housed two per room with shared bath, and all meals
are provided by the Fjellstue's kitchen staff. Breakfasts and
dinners, featuring traditional Norwegian foods such as fresh lake
trout and lefse, are served in the lodge, and lunch is taken out on
the trail around a campfire with a steaming pot of coffee.
On the lodge's beautiful wooden dance floor, learn the Telespringar
and Tinnspringar from some of Telemark's best dancers, which may
include Olav Sem, Johan Vaa, Kjetil Olesrud and others. Live
hardingfele music for all dance classes will be provided by Halvor
Lisland, and hardingfele lessons will be given by Kjell Midtgaard.
Then, each evening experience a traditional Telemark dance party with
live hardingfele music and visiting dancers and fiddlers. Or just
relax in front of the fire or in the sauna. During the week
excursions may also be arranged, such as a visit with local farm
families and sightseeing tours in Rjukan.
The week will start in the town of Kongsberg for the yearly
Kongsbergmarken fiddle and dance competition, showcasing the best of
Telemark's folk fiddlers, dancers and singers. Festive dance parties
are included both evenings of the competition.
The Telemark Ski/Dance week will run from Friday evening, February 19
to Sunday morning, February 28. The tentative cost of $750 (dependent
on currency fluctuations) includes room and board, all instruction,
ski equipment rental, ski lessons, and admission to the
Kongsbergmarken competition. Or you may opt to arrive after the
Kongsbergmarken on Sunday, February 21; cost will be reduced
accordingly.
Send in your deposit of $100 (U.S. checks accepted) as soon as
possible to: Karin Brennesvik, P.O. Box 6, N-3652 Hovin, Norway. Or
call her at 011-47-36-99257 (or fax 011- 47-36-99144) to reserve a
place. Participants will be accepted any time if there is space
available, but Karin needs to know as soon as possible if you are
interested. For more information, or to get on the mailing list for
future events, call her representative in the United States, Loretta
Kelley, at (310) 391-1269.
