448.0. "SVALBARD and holidays. Help !" by LEMAN::SCHEIDEGGER (Raymond Scheidegger - Switzerland - DTN 753-2285) Fri Feb 08 1991 04:45

    Hi,

    I'll be this summer in Norway/Sweden.

    I would like also to stay 2 or 3 nights in SVALBARD.

    It seem very hard to find hotels/B&B ...

    Q1: Have you hints to find an hotel or equivalent solution
        in SVALBARD for 2/3 nights ?

    The only way in found to go to SVALBARD is by plane. (twice a week)
    I think it should also be possible to use a regular lines of boats ...

    Q2: Where to find a time table ?

    Thanks in advance for your help.

448.1Don't know if this will help but..TLE::SAVAGEFri Feb 08 1991 10:179
    My information dates from 1985, but back then there was an office of
    the Norwegian tourist board that covered France/Switzerland.

    The address was:

    	Office National du Tourisme de Norv`ege, 88, Avenue Charles de Galle
    	92200 Neully sur Seine

    Sorry, I don't have a telephone number

One quick look in Aftenposten (an Oslo newspaper) and i found an ad for
a Svalbard/Spitsbergen Cruise. There are probably lots of others, but this
travel agency is called :

	Informa

448.3Mailboat "cruise" ...GRANPA::MWALLAI'dRatherHearSomeBlues&FunkyOl'SoulWed Jul 03 1991 13:5521

    I don't know if the originator has gone yet or not, but...

    I was there in 1980 - we took a two-week "cruise" from Bergen (with
    several stops along the coast of Norway), up to Longyearbyn and
    Ny-Alsund, then back to Bergen. We were actually on a mailboat, so it
    was nothing fancy - a small cabin for sleeping and three meals a day -
    but it included some of the sights at the ports-of-call (transportation
    to and from).

    We, of course, spent all the nights in our little cabin, so I don't
    know about places to stay on Svalbard.

    We were the first boat up that summer and the weather was wonderfully
    clear!  What an *incredible* place!!!

    Anyway, if anyone is interested, I can dig up the old information
