Greetings!
The Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have been in the news
recently because of their push for autonomy from the Soviet Union.
Because of their strategic position on the Baltic Sea, they have been
the targets of numerous invasions since the Middle Ages. During a brief
period between WWI and WWII, all three peoples enjoyed freedom, and
their nations enjoyed both independence and autonomy.
During WWII, all three were over-run and illegally annexed by the Soviet
Union, which embarked on campaigns of de-nationalization. This included
programs to promote immigration to the Baltic States by non-Balts,
programs to eliminate or "Soviet-ize" historical national monuments, and
so on. These programs were both pernicious and pervasive. From my own
background: one of my godfather's relatives, who died fighting in the
underground against the Soviets in WWII, even had his grave marker
replaced by the state twenty years after his death, with an inscription
that he "gave his life for the Proletariat."
Despite subjugations by much larger powers, the Balts to this day remain
fiercely independent and singularly proud of their national heritages.
At the suggestion and encouragement of fellow DEC-ies, we're establishing
this conference to discuss all Baltic topics: current affairs, history,
culture, language, etc. We invite all those with Baltic roots to
participate and share their enthusiasm and pride in "all things Baltic."
Best regards,

-< BALTIC, and Baltic news, are back! >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been quite a while since we've been active here. What's going on
now in the Baltics now, however, is of grave concern for many of us
with both roots, family, and relatives there. And it is being over-
shadowed by events in the Gulf.
I'm not sure how much discussion we'll spark. However, we now have access
to Baltic news from the Internet, and we'll be posting it here as a
service to those of us concerned with the Baltics. (It was much too
difficult to post news articles.)
BALTIC is (publicly) back on line!
Best regards,
Peters
