437.0. "Looking for orthodox rabbi in Norway" by ICS::SELTZER (Richard Seltzer) Tue Dec 04 1990 14:11

A friend of mine is looking for an orthodox rabbi in Norway who can do kosher
inspection of frozen and smoked salmon. (Apparently, there aren't very many
orthodox rabbis in Norway.) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The few rabbis who are in Norway would be Orthodox. The one who is head
of the "Mosaic Society" (The Norwegian name for the organizational
entity of Judaism here; lit "Mosaiske Samfunn") here in Oslo is Rabbi M
    Melchior; address: Bergstien 13, 0172 Oslo 1 (Ph: 47-2-69 26 12).

I know that he is Orthodox because some friends of ours from the US
were visiting us during Yom Kippur a couple of years ago. The wife
called him to ask about attending services there, but was somewhat put
off as there seemed to be a differentiation between men & women (she
said, "that guy is really Orthodox", or words to that effect).

On the other hand, he has appeared on TV a number of times, and I have
always found him quite reasonable and broad-minded on a number of
topics. I am sure that your friend will at the very least be pointed in
the right direction by contacting him. (He is, by the way, Danish by
origin; not really relevant, except if your friend is Norwegian or
Swedish and attempts to talk with him by phone or something).

    Best of luck
