COPENHAGEN, Denmark (UPI) -- Denmark's parliamentary Intelligence
Committee met Wednesday to discuss allegations that Israel's
intelligence agency Mossad is working illegally in Denmark. The
decision to call the meeting followed allegations that Mossad is active
in Denmark inviolation of Danish law and practice and despite previous
government assurances the agency was passive in the country.
Unconfirmed reports said that Mossad eavesdropped on Arabs living
in or visiting Denmark and that Denmark's own intelligence agency used
Mossad to screen visa applications from Arab nationals.
The current controversy erupted with the publication in the United
States of "By Way of Deception," a book on the Israeli intelligence
agency written by former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky. Ostrovsky
wrote that a liaison officer in Denmark's Police Intelligence Agency
routinely screened indigenous Arabs seeking visas with Mossad, and told
Danish television Sunday a DPIA agent also routinely furnished Mossad
with tapes of bugged conversations.
Despite denials by Justice Minister Hans Engell and DPIA Chief
Anne- Mette Moller that details in Ostrovsky's book were incorrect, the
parliamentary committee decided to investigate. "We have no knowledge
that Mossad actively carries out operations in Denmark. If they are
doing so, their operations are contrary to Danish legislation," Engell
said.
But following a meeting Monday with Engell, some committee members
said they remained uncertain about Mossad's role in the country and
called for a further investigation. "If there are members of the
committee who do not feel they have been given a full enough report on
the issue, then I do not think we should use a majority to shut them
up," said Liberal committee member Bjorn Elmquist.
Elmquist's party is in a three party, Conservative-led coalition
ruling the country. "We have been assured that not all visa
applications are checked with Mossad," said Elmquist, who said
cooperation between Denmark's intelligence agency and foreign
intelligence agencies is necessary.
Wednesday's meeting was expected to result in a further
investigation into contacts between Mossad and the DPIA.
