> Calling all fellow alcoholics !
From one of them:
What do you really mean by saying 'Mintu'? Do you mean 'Creme de
Menthe', produced by State Alcohol Monopoly of Finland (=ALKO)?
If you do, it is available in Finland; the number in ALKO's
price list is 1792 and the price in Finland (not tax-free) is
50,00 FIM (about 14 USD) - quite expensive in Finland, isn't it?
Anyway, welcome to Finland to taste it once more!
If you like liqueurs you should try the finnish 'Lakka' made by
Chymos (60,- FIM, #1902 in the price list), 'Lapponia Lakkalikri'
by Marli (60,- FIM, #2032) or 'Lakka' by Lignell & Piispanen
(62,- FIM, #1942). All the prices is for 0,37 liter.
- And even better (I think) is 'Mesimarja' by Lignell &
Piispanen (93,- FIM/0,33 liter, #1963).
For explanation: 'lakka' is cloudberry in english and 'mesimarja'
is artic bramble (Rubus articus).
I'm sorry that I can't help you to buy them from your country;
anyway it is not MY fault ;-)
regards from Finland

No... It's called Mintu. It's not sweet and sickly like most liquers.
Unfortunately I've got rid of the bottle so I can't find out who makes
the stuff.
By the way, my wife flew back from Arlanda last night and there was a
total power failure there so none of the duty free shops were open.
Aaaarrrgh!......

| Are you sure about the spelling? Mint in Finnish is 'Minttu'
(peppermint is piparminttu) so the name sounds plausible (except for
this spelling error)... not living in Finland I can't help you further
though.

> Are you sure about the spelling? Mint in Finnish is 'Minttu'
No .. I'm not sure about the spelling. It may well be Minttu.
It comes in half or one litre bottles made of clear, slightly textured,
glass. The label on the front is predominantly blue, with white text
and a bit of red. The label on the back contains three or four recipies
for cocktails. I think one of them was called a 'Blizzard'. It's
quite strong stuff (60%) but very very smooooooth!

| Update from a reliable source (my father, who retired from ALKO about a
year ago after having worked there since the mid-50s):
MINTTU is a peppermint schnapps made by Chymos. It is strictly export
stuff, Finland having restrictions as to strength of booze sold
inside the country. You can probably find it in any Scandinavian
tax-free.

| It is possible that both .1 and .6 are right.
A number of brands seem to have different names in the air port
tax-free than they do in our peculiarly Nordic state monopolies.
An example of this is "Finlandia" vodka. As far as I know, this
is not sold in the Norwegian state monopoly, but is a big mover
in the various air ports (nice pattern on bottle---sometimes with
a free shot-glass). The contents, however, are "Koskenkorva", a
genuine household word throughout the Nordic countries; a noble
name, embued with true glory as it rolls sonorously from the tongue
(on the other hand, the "international" sophisticate whom the marketing
boys are aiming at will probably tend to buy a name he can pronounce
in a fancy bottle).

Hic!
> MINTTU is a peppermint schnapps made by Chymos.
Who are Chymos? If they're some kind of distilling company maybe
they'd be willing to export a few bottles to Holland. Everyone
down here who's tried Minttu have loved it (including one friend
who owns a liqour shop!). This could be a (minor) boost for
Finland's trade figures.
Re. .7
Koskenkorva brings back a few memory blackouts!

| re .7:
Finlandia vodka is *not* the same as Koskenkorva. It's the same as Dry
Vodka in the Finnish state monopoly. Koskenkorva has a tiny bit of
sugar in it.
re .8:
Chymos makes liqueurs and chocolate.

| re .9: Correct.
During my travels through various European tax-free shops I've seen
probably umpteen versions of Finnish Vodka. The most common is probably
the kitsch bottle with two white reindeers on the label - but I have
e.g. a 60% version called 'Koskenkorva Vodka'. Hard stuff, this...
