359.0. "Nordic Kinglists Wanted..." by ULYSSE::T_ROBB (Valandil Lambiendur) Mon Aug 21 1989 12:25

Any one in Scandinavia knows of a reference to a decent book of
Nordic royalty, nobility and heraldry (with genealogical data)?

    Not in English, but...

    How about an encyclopedia?

Our set at home, "Store Norske Leksikon", gives the complete list
of all heads of state for all countries under the entry for the
particular country in mind. This also includes sub-headings when
a new dynasty starts. For the Nordic countries there are a great
number of tables; also including one for heads of government (i.e.,
prime ministers). However, the Head-of state listing for all monarchies
would give you the complete info you are after. (Also for countries
like Britain/England, Russia, etc; specifying when the given families
started, such as Tudors, Hanovers or Romanovs, as the case may be).

If you could get access to this, the language problem would not
be a hindrance, since the tables are easily apparent, and the names
are reasonably recognizable (with a few anomolies; did you know
that "James" comes out as "Jakob" in Norwegian?? This is as bad
as "Carl XII" becoming "Charles XII" in English. Tit for tat).
