| Hello Ed,
I have not been to Bergen since 1969, so this may be some what out
of date.
Hotel Norge was the biggest and newest then. Disco in the hotel.
Hotel Neptun older but nice rooms good restuarant.
Hotel Bristol also old, and unknown quality.
Hotel Slotsgarten (SP) Nice place.
Hotel Rosenkrantz this was old and may not exist now, it was my
favorite place, as the food was excellent, and the dancing was
excellent.
I can not recall the names of any others. Do try some reindeer
if possible at the Restaurant in the Neptun. And the fish is the
worlds best..the fish market is at the end of the Quay.
Enjoy, and get over to Fantov (SP) to the wooden church, and Grieg's
house "Trollhaugen." If not possible, then enjoy my favorite city.

We just got back from just over three weeks in Scandinavia. It was
great. Norway was our favorite country and we liked Bergen alot.
Balestrand was also nice - we took the ferry there from Bergen.
We stayed at the Hotel ORIEN in Bergen. It was in the old part of
Bergen and was comfortable and near everything. It was 400 a night
for a double and included breakfast. When we got there we had no idea
where we were going to stay and went to tourist information and they
booked the room for us. They suggested a few places which were
available that night so it looked like last minute rooms are no
problem.
Also if you have time take the bus from Voss to gudvagen or vv. It
was the most breathtaking experience.

Yes - and everyone speaks English, just about. It IS appreciated
of course if you ask them first in Norweigan whether they speak English.
Two days in Bergen and then directly to Stockholm! I would say do NOT
go to Norway and miss the fjords! Instead of staying a second night
in Bergen, consider (in the afternoon of your second day) taking
an express steamer to Gudvangen, and then the ->bus from there to Voss<-.
You can stay overnight in Voss or Flam or possibly hop on the overnight
train from Bergen to Oslo as it stops in Mydral or Voss.
Also, if you are a sweater-hound, the Souvenier shop in Balustrand
has the best prices we encountered in Norway, if you can work the stop.

Bergen was the capital of Norway for a long time and is for the time
being the second largest city in Norway.
Bergensk (the dialect spoken in Bergen) is a Bokmaal dialect. It is
true that some spoken words are similar to nynorsk/ landsmaal, but it
is a grave insult to 99% of people from Bergen to say that they speak
nynorsk/ landsmaal. The first written language taught in Bergen schools
is also bokmaal.

Greetings,
My first post to this group. Bergen is my home town so I guess I should
know it.
First re. nightlife; As one other person pointed out, it's very
expensive although there are some places that sell cheaper beer than
others. What's your preference? My brother is studying at U of Bergen
and his crowd spends the occational night at places like Garage, Villa
Amorini, Cafe Opera etc... distinct student element which is a
refreshing change from some of the other clubs/discos in Bergen. Some
places get a bit too rowdy. Check out the cafe/pub on Ole Bulls Plass,
next to Hotel Norge. Dead-centre of town and a good place to hang out
and people-watch. Not too cheap though.
There are some cheap cafe's around the fish market/harbour area. Food
is basic, but ok and cheap for norwegian standards. Also, you might
consider checking out the U of Bergen cafeteria on "Nygaardshoeyden".
Now, for May 17th. You are in luck - you will get to see a very unique
thing; the Bergen 'Buekorps' in the parade. It might look like several
junior paramilitary outfits in uniforms and carrying cross bows. The
Buekorps is/has been subject to much debate regarding whether or not
the toy guns etc is a good thing for little kids to play with, but it's
a very typical Bergen thing and you can't see them anywhere else in
Norway.
I'd suggest getting in to town relatively early and look for a vantage
point to watch the parade. The city will be very crowded. If it suits
your budget, you might be able to get a table on the 3rd or 4th floor
of Hotel Norge and watch the parade from the balcony there. It's been
a few years since I was in Bergen on May 17th, so you better check
the route of the parade. Look for the closed-off streets and cops.
Bergen takes pride in its celebration of May 17th even though there is
an old saying "I'm not from Norway, I'm from Bergen." I hope you'll
enjoy the time you spend in the "City Between the 7 Mountains".
E-mail me if you would like more info or details about anything
regarding Bergen.
