336.0. "Stmbandet - Scandinavian Choral Music" by GEMVAX::MATTSSON () Fri Jun 02 1989 17:23

    I am a member of a Scandinavian Choral Group called "Sta"mbandet",
    which means either 'The vocal chord' or 'The band of voices'. We
    perform mostly in Swedish (Half of the members are native Swedes),
    but also have pieces in Norwegian, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic.
    We are finish for this particular season, but will be starting up
    in September again. We are a 14-voice a cappella group with occasional
    accompaniment with guitar and bass. This is our tenth year and
    we were fortunate enough to be invited to perform at the 1988 New
    Sweden Festival to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of Swedish
    settlement in America, and "Morning Pro Musica" with Robert J Lurtsema
    of WGBH Boston for St. Lucia's Day. There is also a good chance
    that we may be performing on WGBH again in February 1990 for the
    250th anniversary of the birth of Carl Michel Bellman, who is one
    of the most famous Swedish composers. Our repetore varies from
    folk songs to love songs to elegies.

    Sorry, but I'm working on an archaic DECmate and it doesn't let
    me compose characters. When they finally give me a decent terminal,
    then I can be authentic like the rest of you. Until then I'll have
    to inprovise.

    As of this time, it looks like we will be performing on Morning Pro
    Musica for Bellman's birthday. I'll let you know when I have the
    definite date.

    Also, a subset of the group (including me) will give an interview on
    the Coffeehouse show on WERS (88.9 FM, Boston) on November 7th at

    The concert at Passim starts at 8:30 and Passim is at 47 Palmer Street,
    which is the street between the two sections of the Harvard Coop. We
    had a successful warm-up concert, a good last rehersal, and the
    interview on WERS went very well. Hope to see some DECcies there.
    You'll be able to spot me somewhat easily. I'm the blond tenor. (Yes,
    I know, surprise, a blond in a Scandinavian singing group :-) )

    It's actually Passim.

    Also, Stambandet will be making our first recording this June and it
    should be ready for purchase by this fall. We're picking out the music
    and we haven't even gotten to a title yet. We have the choice of
    either recording CD's or cassettes. What would you rather buy from a
    small recording group?

    It's easier to access a cassette player (for example, in a motor
    vehicle) than a CD player.
336.15CD for meTLE::PETERSONBob, DEC FortranWed Mar 13 1991 10:586
You'll sell more cassettes, but I'd rather have a CD. Cassettes are more
accessable and are almost always cheaper to buy than a CD. And cost is probably
more important for getting heard when people haven't heard you before. Still,
I haven't heard you and I'd rather have a CD.  I'm weird.

336.16ICS::KMATTSSONPedestrians Unite!Tue Mar 19 1991 10:1110
We're probably going to go with the Cassettes, as they are a bit cheaper to
produce and more people can use them, but many radio stations won't play
cassettes, only CD's or LP's.

We might do the cassettes first and then when we make some money release some
CD's, but then the people who buy CD's may already have the cassette.

Oh well.  8-)

    Well, the cassette has been argued about, edited and the master tape is
    done. After much haggling, we came up with the title "Smultron och
    Vin" which translates in English to "Wild Strawberries and Wine".
    There are 12 songs and 2 guitar solos on the cassette. We hope to be
    ready to sell them by next month.

    Let me know if you are interested in purchasing a copy and I'll get
    more information to you when they are ready.
