I had a class on Old Icelandic/Old Norse a year ago while at school. As part of the class we read in English translation (as well as reading chapters in the "original" Old Norse) the saga: Njls Saga. It was a very good story. Anyway, it got me interested in reading sgu (in translation). I bought and read King Harald's Saga and borrowed Laxdla Saga. I recently was able to buy for 99 each Hrafnkels Saga and Other Stories and The Vinland Sagas: The Norse Discovery of America (I think that is what it was called). I am about 7/8 the way through Hrafnkel and will start The Vinland Sagas soon. I enjoy reading these sagas in translation. I would recommend them to anyone interested in good reading in a slightly different narrative style. The translations are usually by Magnus Magnusson and/or Pl Plson (I think that is his name) and are from Penguin Books. They are probably available from other publishers, but I haven't seen them.

I checked at home. The other translator is Hermann Plson, not Pl Plson. Chad

Yes, I too like many of the Icelandic sagas ("sgur" plural, "saga" singular) I could also recommend Egils Saga and Grettirs Saga. There is a movie series that is very interesting; there are two movies (at my last count) the first was presented at the Cannes Film festival last year, and I saw it while in Iceland in November... I think it was called " skugga hrafnsins" which means in the Ravens shadow... I'm looking forward to seeing the other(s) (gott lka a halda vi slenzkuna !) me bestu kvejur \rikki

Does anyone know how to get copies of any of these Icelandic films on video tape? (With English subtitles?) I heard that one was shown in Boston recently but we missed it. |
