326.0. "Stockholm hotels" by CADSE::SMITH (Tom Smith) Fri Apr 14 1989 16:23

    [also posted in ON_THE_ROAD]

Does anybody have any experience with, or information about, the Hotel
Stockholm at Norrmalmstorg 1? The only experience I have in Stockholm
    is with the Birger Jarl.

I've been quoted an incredibly low rate by the host (SEK 390). Aside
from expecting the room to be very small and very clean, I'm wondering
    what else to expect.

I don't know much, but it looks good from the outside. If you are
staying at that Hotel you will be at very center of Stockholm. You
don't have more than 5 minutes to anything in 'downtown' Stockholm.

I think the standard is perfectly OK, Swedish hotels normally has
    a very high standard.

"Very small and very clean" sounds about right. It's on the third (more or
less) floor of what looks like an ordinary office building. The cheapest
summer hotels in Stockholm are in the student dormitories (Jerum and,
possibly, Domus) These are mostly single rooms with private baths,
about a 5 minute walk from the subway.

At Norrmalmstorg, you're a few blocks from everything.

Martin.

I stayed at the Hotel Stockholm this past summer and would highly
recommend it, especially if you are there to see the city (as opposed
to going to the Digital office). The best thing about it is the
central location; very convenient to the attractions most visitors
    want to see.
I was surprised at the price, as well. I believe we paid SEK 600
for a room for three people, whereas most of the other hotels we
checked were SEK 800 and up. The hotel actually occupies two floors
at the top of an office building. The "lobby" is actually on the
6th or 7th floor. Consequently, it lacks some typical hotel amenities,
like a restaurant (there is a small breakfast room serving a European
style breakfast), bar, etc. However, if you are looking for an
outstanding location at a very reasonable price, I think you'd be
very pleased with the Hotel Stockholm.

Hotell Kristineberg is one of the less expensive hotels in Stockholm.
While not exactly near the central station, it is close to the
underground and a 15 minute ride will take you there.

Welcome Hotel in Barkarby north of Stockholm is also one of the less
expensive hotels, and keeps a quite reasonable standard for the money.
It is very close to a commuter train station, and also here it takes
about 15 minutes to get to the central station (although you can also
get off at the Karlberg or Stockholm Sdra stations.

    Hope this helps.

Well, the Hotel Stockholm wasn't bad for SEK 390 (about $60). It was
clean as expected, and not as small as I feared. I _could_ swing a cat.
The bedroom was about 12 feet by 15 feet (4 x 5 meters), and the
private bath required two or three steps from one end to the other.
Furnishings were simple but comfortable, with a single bed, sofa, and a
desk large enough to work on. They even replaced my TV with a brand-new
    Philips while I was there.

Granted, these were summer rates and also a special arrangement by the
host of my meeting, but my colleagues who didn't get the special rate
    still paid only SEK 560.

The location is superb, half way between Nybroplan and the NK
department store. There are lots of moderately priced restaurants and
cafes within a two-block radius, which is fortunate, because the hotel
only serves breakfast. This hotel is not close to Digital, but it's
no more than a 45 minute walk/subway/walk, even at rush hour.

Stockholm at midsummer is a very nice venue.

I dialled the hotel number and got a poorly recorded message both times. I
can't understand spoken Swedish well, so all I could divine was something about
numbers and "1-2-0-7x?". How do I call international directory assistence? Has
anyone further advice for me on getting this hotel?

(I rang 011 +46 8 22 13 20, the AT&T and US Sprint format from the USA.)

I did so for you and found out that the new number to the
    hotel is +46 8 678 13 20 (Hotel Stockholm, right?). There
are quite a few changes of number in the Stockholm area
right now, new technology is installed.

I dialed 0 and was eventually transferred to someone who said to
dial +46-8-102880 for directory assistence in Sweden. Perhaps AT&T is a
better deal for people calling internationally?

Thanks, P Landh, for doing the research. Not only do you speak Swedish
but you understand muffled recordings! I was right then about the phone
system changing - now all those old travel guides are worthless for phone
numbers!

The Stockholm Hotel rate for winter is 840:- (US$152) weeknights and 590:-
(US$107) weekend nights - and for staying 7 days they threw in Sunday night
at the low rate. This is the single room rate. They were helpful, and gave
me clear directions from the airport. However at those rates I will definitely
be trying to switch hotels once I'm there.

Sprint was rude to me. First, the instructions for dialling direct from home
include the prefix 011, but using the calling card it's just 01. The voice menu
customer "service" system only told me to use 011. The human agent I then got
somewhat snootily told me RTFM (the back of my card, which I never carry) when I
suggested they should make the prefixes identical.

This last weekend I stayed in the Hotel Stockholm. The rate was 590 SEK,
inclusive of a pretty reasonable buffet breakfast. The room was smallish and
the bathroom very small - practically had to stand over the loo to use the
basin - but with the hotel's ideal location I would say it was quite good
value.

I have stayed at the Hotel Jerum [spelling] as a tourist. The hotel is
actually student housing during the school year and it rents rooms to
(at least) tourists during the summer season. It is nice, well
located, inexpensive (compared to other hotels in the area), and serves
    a breakfast.

They *may* have some arrangements for longer stays for students and
others. I have no more information than this, but perhaps one of the
locals there can follow up on this.
