315.0. "Events in Sweden during 1988" by ESIS::GOODWIN (Malin Goodwin) Tue Jan 17 1989 16:58

Hej!!

The year of 1988 has come to an end, and the papers list major events in the
country that happened during the past year. However, if you are a swede away
from home, you do not get that service about sweden from your local newspaper.

Would you people in Sweden like to tell us swedes out here what events was
remembered on the this-happened-in-1988-pages in the papers?

And who got "rets Svensk???"- award ("The swede of the year")

    Hej p Er !

"rets Svensk" is, of course, the famous Publisher/Homicide
    investigator EBBE CARLSSON !

Now, only a few weeks after he got the award he is suspected of
crimes that might send him to jail ...

Beware of the "rets Svensk" award winners !

315.2Swede of the year!STKSMA::AHLGRENMy God, It's full of stars!!Wed Jan 18 1989 16:5830
Being the Swede of the year is really a dangerous task :

In 1985 the award was given to Reefat El-Sayed an egyptian immigrant
that created a large Pharma-company out of nothing. Two months later
it was discovered that he was doing a lot of 'dirty' business.
(Creating profits that didn't exist, giving favours to friends etc)
He lost the company and has today personal debts on over $250
    Millions!!!

In 1986 the award was given to Hans Holmer. He was the leader of
the Palme-murder investigations. Two months after he got the award
he was fired beacuse he used illegal methods trying to catch the
killer (and being totally incompetent, with another investigator
maybe the murder would have been solved by now...)

In 1987 the award was given to Anna-Lisa Stoican for her fight to
get her Romanian husband a permit to immigrate to Sweden from Romania.
(Romania wouldn't release him) . Nothing has happened to her so
she is the exception that proves the rule.

And as told in the earlier note this years award was given to Ebbe
Carlsson who been doing a 'private' investigation of the
Palme-murder.It was a big scandal that had strings all the way up
to the Leader of the Department of Justice (who had to resign).

    Nice bunch...

    Paul.

Here's 6 big news in the Swedish media during 1988.

    1. The 'Ebbe Carlsson' Scandal.

This is the story of the publisher that is 'friend' with all
of the powerful people in the politics. He did a 'private'
investigation of the Palme-homocide. His investigation led
to that a minister had to resign and that public hearings
    	became a 'hit'.

    2. The '41-year' old man.

The catch of the man that is suspected for killing Olof Palme.
The problem right now seems to be to find enough evidence.
I think that it's very likely that the man is innocent and will
    	be released soon.

    3. The Seals and the algeas.

The big environmental catastrophe that caused the death of most
fish and 70% of the seals in the waters around Sweden.

Something went wrong in Kattegatt and the Baltic this year.
In the early part of the year we got something that is called
'algea-bloom'. This caused most of the fish and plants to die.
Later in the summer suddenly the seals started to die. A virus
killed more than 70% of all the seals in the Swedish waters...

    4. The Election.

There are three things to note from this years election.

    	1. The Social democrats won which means that they have ruled
Sweden for 50 out of the last 56 years.

    	2. That for the first time in history, it wasn't economy that
was the main issue, it was our environment...

    	3. A new party entered the Parliament for the first time since
1917 (Communists). It was the 'Milj|partiet'. This is the
green people, they entered mainly beacause of number 4.2

    5.	The Tax Reform.

Just before Christmas the minister of Finance suggested the
biggest Tax reform EVER in Sweden. It is already said that
this is the most important reform in Sweden for over 75 years!
(More infor about this exist in another note).

    6.	The '89 Budget.

This is really Jan-89 news. The budget has no deficit for the
first time in over 25 years. Therefore it will not be possible
to buy any state bonds this year (which people are used to).
There is a surplus of over $75 Millions!

I think this covers the most important things of 88-89

    Paul.
