307.0. "Looking for Swedish teacher" by NEXUS::K_STRAND () Sat Nov 19 1988 14:01

I AM OF SWEDISH ORIGIN AND ALTHOUGH I USED TO SPEAK AND READ SOME SWEDISH,
    I HAVE LOST IT OVER THE YEARS. I LIVE IN COLORADO SPRINGS AND WAS
    WONDERING IF ANYONE KNOWS ABOUT SOMEONE WHO TEACHES SWEDISH.

Actually, I've been waffling about whether to post a similar request, so I'm
using the coattails approach.

I've been studying on my own with a taped course. Its fine but as I'm learning
this alone in my family and circle of friends it's hard to get practice or
motivation. It's the middle of the school year so I can only ask for tutors or
others to help split the cost of a language school (pricey even shared). I
plan on joining a proper evening class next Fall.

Advice is probably most welcomed.

Tack s mycket,

I have two books in German (which I can speak) that teach Swedish, both
are by Langenscheidt and appear to be quite good. I also have a "Teach yourself
Swedish" book that I don't care for so much. I have a hard time getting the
discipline to regularly study and learn. If someone (or many
someones) is interested in the Pepperell/Nashua area I would be interested
in getting together regularly to study together. (I do better with the
discipline part when others are a part).

307.3Semi-private lessons, part 1TLE::PETERSONBobTue Mar 07 1989 13:3414
I've taken the plunge and it's not as expensive as I'd thought. A private
course would be US$30/hour at LSI, Language School International. I am taking a
semi-private course from them at US$18/hour, plus my teacher is a native
speaker.

I've only had a couple sessions (the free intro and the first 1 hours). When
I've had more I'll post another reply here, a kind of "course evaluation."

The teacher was prepared for any objective, either literacy, conversation and (I
suppose) business related emphasis. I have opted for general conversational
emphasis so I'd better not try driving myself around Sweden until I am literate
too!

307.4More on those lessonsTLE::PETERSONBobTue May 23 1989 16:2020
It's been fun so far, but definitely not for very busy people. I share the
class with one other student. She will be dropping out soon and probably not
resuming, so I'll be forced to stop also just because the rate will go up.

The teacher's good, though I wish we'd practice more pronunciation. We've done
some, long/short vowels like a, u and o. The difference between the o is bot
and bott are frustratingly alike to my ear. I'm patient, so is the teacher,
but the other student almost had a fit, which dampened the learning atmosphere.

I'll continue with classroom lessons. My teacher is considering doing
lessons in Littleton Mass, which would save me the trek into Cambridge for
Harvard's or the Adult Ed's class. Inner 495 people would have a much easier
time choosing where to learn, but this Townsend immigrant has to sacrifice
more.

Jag kan talar svenska bra, och lser och skriver ocks. Men jag behver mer
vning (rtt ord?) med att hra och frst svenska. Jag tycker, att jag ska f
vningen som jag behver i en stor klass.
