| | Yesterday, a new Norwegian channel started operation on satellite
    - they call themselves 'TV Norge'.

Not that they seemed to have much Norwegian programs... the opening
evening consisted mainly of UK/US/Australian stuff..

Could one of our Norwegian correspondents shed some light on the
    background of this channel?

In their opening show they proudly said that Norway was the only
country in Europe with just one TV channel, but not anymore...

Norway probably is still the only country with just one (norwegian) TV
channel because 'TV Norge' probably isn't broadcasted in Norway!

    Norwegians do funny things....

| | 'TV Norge' is another try by people and resources
from small private TV companies that didn't do too well.
In addition to the one and only national Norwegian
TV channel (the second one is on its way...), there
are local stations, most of them non-commercial.

As for programming, the only Norwegian stuff so far
is sports coverage. The rest of their 3-4 hours per
night is English/American series, rock concerts, etc.

It's also ironic to note that just now when it
meets even more commercial competition, the national
(public) TV company has less money for buying/making
    quality programs than ever...

    (Let's hear it for radio!)

| | I thought maybe the Norsk TV was bad on purpose, so people wouldn't
slack off on their skiing and rug weaving.

| | I can't tell if Norwegian TV is bad on purpose, but
I'm afraid the consequence can be seen in the number
of VCRs rather than in the number of skiers or weavers.

There's also the linguistic aspect - kids will probably
be more familiar with English and Swedish (lots of people
in Eastern Norway watch Swedish TV) than with different
Norwegian dialects and Norwegian culture as such.

But then again - who am I to cast the first stone...

| | Maybe someone could help me with some information (you don't have
to be a satellite expert or a dish owner, the answers can probably
be found in daily newspapers and/or TV guides):

    - There was a Swedish program called "TV Scandinavia" which only
broadcast on weekends, on the same channel as French TV5. A few
weeks ago they announced this was their last broadcast on that channel
but they will return on another channel - does anyone know where??
Are/were their programs listed in Swedish newspapers/TV guides?

    - Are the programs of TV Norge and "Norsk TV1" listed in Norwegian
newspapers/TV guides? If so, I'd be delighted to have a copy
(they probably have a fairly fixed weekly schedule so even any
past week's program would suffice). TV Norge carries e.g. one
      of my favorites, "Spitting Image"...

| | I'll try to supply you with the schedule for TV Norge and
Norsk TV1 tomorrow. As for the latter, which restarted
this weekend, it seems they'll focus on talk shows with
Norwegian celebrities - and then reruns of those... :^O (yawn).
