254.0. "Sweden\USSR accord on Baltic Sea boundary dispute" by TLE::SAVAGE (Neil, @Spit Brook) Thu Jan 21 1988 09:51
Christian Science Monitor. Wednesday, January 13, 1988
On Tuesday, Sweden announced an agreement with the Soviet Union which
splits commercial rights in a disputed zone of the Baltic Sea, ending
19 years of negotiations.
The accord was reached Monday in talks between Prime Minister Ingvar
Carlsson and Soviet Premier Nikolai Rizhkov, who was making the
Soviets' first high-level visit to Sweden in 15 years.
Mr. Carlsson told a news conference the accord gives Sweden the rights
to 75 percent of the 8,390 square-mile zone, while the Soviets will get
one-fourth.
