237.0. "Espionage in Sweden." by MAY20::MINOW (Je suis marxiste, tendance Groucho) Fri Oct 09 1987 10:21

From Vogon News Service...

THE SPY WHO CAN'T BE FIRED
==========================

The Swedish General Staff has a spy among the staff. The
authorities would like to fire him, but the Swedish Labour
Courts have ruled that he can't be fired. This is the result of
the Swedish job security laws. Not even espionage is considered
good grounds for firing an employee.

Swedish Air Force Lt. Col. Bertil Stroberg was convicted of
espionage in 1983 and sentenced to 6 years [my, how harshly they
treat traitors in Sweden! - Geoff] in jail. He was caught
red-handed trying to offer military secrets to an eastern power.
After spending 3 years in jail he received a conditional pardon.

Upon being convicted he was fired from his job. His firing
was ruled illegal on a technicality by the Labour Courts. The
Justice Chancellor then jumped in and fired him by decree. The
traitor then appealed yet again and was again reinstated by the
Labour Courts. Thus, a convicted spy is still employed by the
Swedish General Staff with full rights to pay and benefits. "It
doesn't look like I'll get my old job responsibilities back, at
least not yet," says Lt. Col. Bertil Stroberg.

Another Swedish spy just escaped while on vacation from the jail.

His car was found near Helsinki yesterday. One wonders which direction
    he's escaping?
