CNA (TAIWAN) NEWS WIRE : Swedish Women Want Law to Forbid 'Import' of
Asian Women
Stockholm, June 24 (CNA): A petition signed by 11,000 Swedish women
demanding that the Swedish government stop the "slave trade in Asian
women to Sweden" was delivered Wednesday to Justice Minister Sten
Wickbom.
The petition is an effort by women from all major Swedish political
parties. These women claimed that at least 3,000 Asian women, most of
them from Thailand and the Philippines, are "imported" to Sweden every
year by Swedish men.
A life of misery and even prostitution awaits many of the Asian women,
stated the petition. Often the Swedish men become tired of these Asian
women and send them back after they have stayed only a few months in
Sweden.
Swedish men pay 1,000 U.S. dollars to agents in Asia for each woman.
She then receives a one-way ticket and a three-month visa to Sweden.
The petition demands that this type of business be forbidden by law.
