| Go for it! For a beach-centered vacation, I strongly recommend
the west coast of Sweden. Gothenburg and Bohusln!

What are typical temperature ranges in July and August in these
areas of Sweden? Would we be able to go romping through the
surf?

| Air temperature range is about the same as Bar Harbor, Maine, in the
U.S. Water temps are much warmer, however. There have been day
on the Swedish west coast that I have been quite comfortable in
a light sweater in the full sun. On the other side, temperatures
above 85 degrees Fahrenheit (26 C.) are unusual in Swedish summer.

| One place i could recomennd four you is a little island called KOSTER
situated outside a small town called Strmstad. This little town
is situated only some kilometres from the Norwegian border. This
little island has the highest amounts of sun in Sweden. Actually
i thingk the sun shines about 320 days oer year.
Regards Stefan.
P.S. This little island i a relly lovely place. And as a matter
a fact not so many foreigners come here so it could be really
interesting for you. If you are really interested you could contact
mee via VAXmail STKEIS::BYSTAM or DECmail Stefan Bystam@SOO. Because
i can rent a week at that special location to you if ypu are
interested.

213.7 | Gotland, or Jutland perhaps? | BRSADG::VANDENEEDE | Raf Van den Eede | Fri Jul 24 1987 08:53 | 42 |
| Some more suggestions...
A friend of mine, who stayed over there for more than a year, told me
that Gotland, a small island off the east coast of Sweden, can be
considered a real paradise for people who like to stroll around
beaches and enjoy the Swedish sun. It's also an ideal place for
cycling, so I'm told, and brochures of Gotland all seem to confirm
that.
Speaking from my own experience, I can also strongly recommend Jutland.
Towards the northeast and east, this (or should I say 'the') Danish
peninsula offers a beautiful range of small typical villages and
pleasant beaches. When returning from a two-week holiday in Norway in
July '85, in order to recover from the Kristiansand-Hirsthals nightboat
crossing (which, by the way, is an occasion to witness a splendid
sunrise), I spent some hours on one of those beaches. I can honestly
say (and in fact, I was quite proud of it, seeing that people always
say I am crazy to spend my holiday in that "cold North") that, in those
few hours, the sun had left more marks on MY skin than on the skin of
another friend of mine who had spent the same weeks in Italy! (Though I
must admit that the weather in Italy at that time was downright
lousy...)
As far as sightseeing is concerned, Jutland also offers a number
of cities, often with pasts that reach back many centuries. (One
example is rhus, which has a beautiful museum of old buildings
definitely worth a visit.) And of course, the Danish countryside
is also worth seeing, that is, if you don't expect to see mountains...
So much for my suggestions.
Please excuse me if I cannot give you more detailed information,
but it's been two years now since I went there, and I don't seem
to remember all place names etc... Nevertheless, I hope I have been
able to give you an idea, roughly, of where you might find some
interesting spots for your summer vacation.
Enjoy your holiday!
(Wish I was going there too...)

See Note 121 in this conference for a report on a trip to Gotland.

I just remembered the name of the rhus museum : it's called
"den gamle by", or, in English, "the old village". Anyone in rhus
should be able to tell you the exact location.

Why don't you try Hotel Jokkmokk, in -guess where- Jokkmokk.
My wife is from Jokkmokk, and we had our wedding dinner there,
in that hotel, and it tasted wonderful. I've heard that there
are new owners, and I haven't been there since they bought it.
I've heard that it isn't as good as it used to be, but it might
be worth trying.
Jokkmokk is a small village 17 km north of the arctic circle.
BTW. If you'd decide to go to Jokkmokk, I could tell you some
places not to vistit, too. :-)
If you could stand spending some time south of the circle, I'd
recommend Filipsborg in Kalix. I've only been there once, but
it's definitely got one of the best restaurants I've ever visited.
It's also possible to stay there, since it has a hotel part, too.
Kalix is near the coast line of the Gulf of Bothnia, about 80 km
from the Finnish border.

213.11 | Norweigen Artic Circle vacation | FIEVEL::FILGATE | Bruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452 | Sun Feb 28 1993 13:53 | 15 |

I am looking for something north of the arctic circle for this summer.
There was a program, about Saab automobiles, that showed a test drive of
one of the Norweigen manufactered models north of the arctic. During
the show it was mentioned that the road used was the nothern-most
maintained road in the world. So, we know its north of the arctic circle,
in Norway; what I'm looking for is a town/location and perhaps the name of
a company that does travel tours into that area.
I prefer two wheels, but would consider other options for a summer vacation
that that area.
thanks,
Bruce

Things to do in Gothenburg:
Visit "etnografiska museet" with its exhibit of the Paracas
textiles. The museum has the world's largest collection of these
2000 years old textiles. Unfortunately they've only got room
to exhibit a tiny fraction of the material, but it's still
very nice.
If you like football, go see a match with IFK Gothenburg.
Visit Slottskogen and join in on the brnnboll games, frisbee
throwing and football games.
Party all night long and then go see the sunrise.
Try to get out on the islands.
See if there's some history reenactment going on at "Nya lvsborg."
Things to do in Bohusln:
Visit "Hllristningsmuseet" in Tanum and see the rock-carvings
on the night tour.
Visit Gullholmen, bathe and go see the preserved home of one
"well-to-do" family.
In Vstergtland:
Visit Varnhem.
Go see the "Sparlsa" runestone. There are cool runestones in
other parts of Sweden too. Like the Rkstone in stergtland
and the Sigurds-carving in Uppland (or whereever it is :)).
In general:
Be outdoors as much as possibly. See if there's some route
that you could travel by foot or by bicycle. There should be
suitable one, two or three day hikes more or less everywhere.
Hope this can be of some help.
