Three top Swedish runners are planning to run in this year's Boston Marathon on Monday (April 20): Tommy Nilsson, Eve Palm, and Joseph (forgot his last name). Tommy won the Stockholm marathon in 1985, while Eve won Stockhom last year; and, at Boston last year, was both first woman masters and fourth woman overall. Tommy, who is staying at my house for the next couple of days, has been looking forward to this race because of the quality of the field -- it might well be the best Marathon field since the LA Olympics. Unfortunately, he is currently struggling with a cold that might cause him to have to drop out. Martin

Well, Tommy didn't recover from his cold and never ran. Evy Palm ran 2:36:24 to become first Master (over 40) woman and sixth overall. She won $10,000 for her sixth place finish. Two Finnish names among the top women: Tuija Jousimaa was 10th woman at 2:44:41 (winning $2,500); and Sinikka Keskitalo was 18th at 2:52:44. Both are from Lynchburg, Virgina. (Hmm, according to the checkpoint list, Keskitalo should have been fifth and Palm sixth.) Among the top men were 21. 2:21:10 Kari Suominen, Finland 60. 2:28:33 Erik Svarstad, Norway |
