Norway's Foreign Minister Dies
OSLO, Norway (AP) - Knut Olav Frydenlund, foreign minister for four
Labor Party governments since 1973, died today after suffering a
cerebral hemmorhage. He was 59.
Frydenlund was stricken Wednesday at Oslo's Fornebu Airport after
returning from a Nordic Council meeting in Helsinki, Finland. He was
taken to Ullevaal Hospital unconscious and died there today.
Born in Drammen, Frydenlund received his law degree from Oslo
University in 1950. He was appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
in 1952, passed his foreign service examination the next year, and then
served in the Norwegian Embassy in West Germany. He returned to the
Foreign Ministry, serving as executive officer from 1956 to 1962. For
several years, he was personal secretary to the late Foreign Minister
Halvard Lange.
Frydenlund was a Labor Party representative in the Storting, or
parliament, beginning in 1969. He was re-elected four times. He first
was appointed Foreign Minister in 1973, and was re-appointed in 1976,
1981 and 1986.
Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland and Defense Minister Johan Joergen
Holst cut short their visit to Tokyo because of Frydenlund's death.
Trade Minister Kurt Mosbakk is temporarily filling in as acting Foreign
Minister. Culture Minister Hallvard Bakke is acting prime minister
until Mrs. Harlem Brundtland returns to Oslo on Friday.
