                      Poisonous Chemical Leaks into Gulf
    
   HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - About 450 tons of the poisonous
chemical benzol leaked into the Gulf of Finland when the valve on a
storage container was accidentally left open, officials said.
    
   Fire Chief Keijo Asplund told Finnish television Monday the leak
occurred at a facility owned by the Mercantile company in Kotka,
100 miles west of Helsinki.
   "The valve had been left open for about a week, and most of the
poisonous benzol leaked directly into the sea," he said.
    
   Because it is heavier than water, the benzol will remain under
ice in the gulf between Finland and Soviet Estonia until spring,
Asplund said.
   "Only the spring and the amount of dead fish will tell how
serious the consequences of the leak were," he said.

    Strange... they must have moved the city... last time I was in Finland,
    Kotka was about 100 miles East of Helsinki...    :-)
