177.0. "Unemployment rates " by TLE::SAVAGE (Neil, @Spit Brook) Wed Dec 31 1986 08:51

Associated Press Tue 30-DEC-1986 12:15 Norway-Jobless

                         Norway's Jobless Rate Rises

OSLO, Norway (AP) - Norway's unemployment rate rose 0.2 percent
in December from the previous month, the government's labor agency
announced Tuesday.

The agency said 2.1 percent of the country's total work force
was unemployed as of Dec. 30, up from 1.9 percent in November but
down from 2.5 percent in December 1985.

In Dagens Nyheter today I saw these unemployment figures for 1994:

Registered unemployed: 350.000 8 % of the workforce

   Unemployed in gov.
   directed 'labor market
   actions' i.e training
   and/or work 210.000 5 %

   Not registered unemployed: 184.000 4 %

   early/disability/sickness
   pension: 300.000 7 %

Total: 1.044.000 which is 24 % of the workforce

   (Source: Birgitta Olsson, Lngtidsutredningen 1995)

I was surprised that the early retirement group was so small
because I have read somewhere else than in DN, that there are
1 early pensioner for every 7th employed.

At the end of last week 462.000 persons were registered as
unjemployed. 122.200 were engaged in 'labor market actions'.
There are also 141.000 persons unemployed who are registered but
not immediately available for a job. All in all, 725.200 people
unemployed (not counting the early pensioners).

There also is a somewhat more hidden form of unemployment since the
number of people who don't try to get a job has increased from 16% to
22% of the population aged 16-64 years. In this figure there is of
course both students, housewives and disabled, but it's remarkable how
it raised synchronized with figures for registered unemployment.

    kind regards!
